The Vancouver Canucks finished last year with a 36-27-6 record during the regular season and defeated the Minnesota Wild and the St. Louis Blues in the postseason before eventually losing in seven games to the Vegas Golden Knights. The Canucks will try to build on last season’s momentum as they open the 2021 season with two straight games against the Edmonton Oilers.
Vancouver is a +115 road underdog on the NHL odds in Edmonton at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The Oilers (-135) are 6-2 in their last eight home games against Vancouver.
Canucks vs Oilers | OddsShark Matchup Report
The Canucks ranked 20th in the NHL in goals-against average last season allowing 3.10 goals per game. The team brought in Braden Holtby to replace Jacob Markstrom as their starting goaltender and made a trade to acquire defenseman Nate Schmidt from Vegas. Holtby had the worst season of his professional career last year with a 3.11 GAA and an .897 save percentage; Vancouver is taking a gamble that he will return to form this season and post numbers closer to his career averages of a 2.53 GAA and a .916 SV%.
Vancouver struggled on the road in 2019-20 with a 14-18-2 record away from home.
The Oilers fizzled out of the playoffs with a loss in the qualifying round to the Chicago Blackhawks last season after finishing the regular season in second place in the Pacific Division with a 37-25-9 record. Edmonton has two of the best offensive players in the league in Connor McDavid (23-years-old) and Leon Draisaitl (25-years-old) but has struggled with offensive depth in recent seasons. The front office added Kyle Turris, Dominik Kahun, and Tyson Barrie this offseason in the hopes of fixing that issue.
Wednesday night’s total is set at six goals at betting sites. The UNDER is 4-2 in the last six games between Edmonton and Vancouver.
Both the Canucks and Oilers enter this season with great young cores and the hopes of taking the next step towards becoming legitimate Stanley Cup contenders. With 10 games scheduled against each other this year, this head-to-head series will play an important role in how this season develops.
