It’s Quinn Hughes’ world, and we’re all just living in it. Hughes took home the Norris Trophy for the league’s top defenceman at Thursday night’s award show in Las Vegas. On early Friday morning, the Canuck defenceman was named as one of the first six players for Team USA’s Four Nations Faceoff.
Joining Hughes on Team USA will be Vegas Golden Knights forward Jack Eichel, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews, Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk, New York Rangers defenceman Adam Fox, and Boston Bruins defenceman Charlie McAvoy.
The tournament will kick off its inaugural year on February 12th – February 20th, 2025, with Boston, Massachusetts and Montreal, Quebec, sharing as the host city. The three nations joining the USA are Canada, Sweden, and Finland. Each Nation will play each other in a round-robin style tournament before the two top teams with the best record faceoff in the Championship game. All matches will be officiated following NHL rules, with three points awarded for a regulation win, two points for an overtime/shootout win and one point for an overtime/shootout loss.
Although Hughes was the only Vancouver Canuck to be announced as one of the first six for any Nation, it is believed he’ll have fellow teammates participating with and against him in the tournament.
Here are the first six names for the remaining three Nations.
Team Canada: Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby, Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon, Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand, Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid, Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brayden Point and Colorado Avalanche defenceman Cale Makar.
Team Sweden: Nashville Predators forward Filip Forsberg, Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander, New York Rangers forward Mika Zibanejad, Florida Panthers defencemen Gustav Forsling, Tampa Bay Lightning Victor Hedman and Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Erik Karlsson.
Team Finland: Carolina Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho, Florida Panthers forward Aleksander Barkov, Colorado Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen, Dallas Stars defencemen Miro Heiskanen and Esa Lindell and Nashville Predators goaltender Juuse Saros.
