8 years agoCanucks Army’s weekly Prospect Report is back! For the third consecutive year, we’ll be providing you with the best quad-monthly prospect report on the Internet. Maybe. For those who are newer to the site, these profiles serve to take a look at the organization’s non-AHL prospects. Check back every Thursday for the latest news and updates on your future Canucks!
While the big club hasn’t started playing games that matter yet, hockey has been under way for nearly a month in much of the world. Many of the team’s prospects have recently headed back to the CHL and started their season while the ones playing in European men’s leagues have had plenty of ice already.
The only prospects waiting to get their seasons underway are those who opted to take the NCAA route, and those who will be playing in Utica or Kalamazoo. With all of that said, how are the ones who have started playing doing? Let’s take a look.

- The Erie Otters have lost more than a few of their key players to better leagues this year, and as such, Kyle Petit will get an opportunity to play in a top-six role. So far, he’s made the most of it, scoring two goals in as many games while adding an assist. He’s managed this pair of goals in just five shots, but I wouldn’t rely on him being a 40.0% sharpshooter moving forward.
- Carl Neill is off to a fantastic start with the Sherbrooke Phoenix. He leads all of the junior prospects in the organization in shots with seven in just two games, though he hasn’t been able to convert them into goals. The act of putting pucks on net is still benefitting the team, though; he’s picked up three assists in the same timeframe.
- Tate Olson is also starting off strong, with a pair of assists in as many games. If he keeps this up, he’ll nearly triple his production from last year, so fingers crossed that this ridiculously small sample holds up!
- Dmitry Zhukenov scored his first goal in North America, and added a few shots.
- Guillaume Brisebois has been extremely quiet, taking a couple of shots but not finding himself on the scoresheet. This is on the opposite end of the “Tate Olson, offensive superstar” spectrum, in that we expect him to even out the tide and start producing soon.
Depending on how the next few weeks play out, we could see the likes of Jared McCann and Jake Virtanen join these guys in future posts, but for now, they’ll continue to push for NHL roster spots.

- Lucas Jasek doesn’t really have a huge hill to climb to set career-high numbers; he had only two points in 27 games last season (which is still solid for a seventeen-year-old in a pro men’s league). The great news is that he’s already halfway there through six games, though he’s currently on a five-game scoreless drought.
- The KHL starts their season earlier than most, which means Nikita Tryamkin has played plenty of hockey. Unfortunately, he hasn’t done much with that time, picking just a single goal and five shots during that time. Even more worrisome is the fact that he’s playing just nine minutes per game, which is about two-thirds of his 2014/15 deployment. He’s also missed two games this year as a healthy scratch, which isn’t a good look for the 21-year-old. There’s still plenty of games left in the season, however, so he’s definitely got time to turn it around.
NCAA
College Hockey is upon us, but it hasn’t started just yet. Ivy League teams will begin playing exhibition games next weekend. In the meantime, Thatcher Demko’s Boston College leads pre-season polling for best team in the country. North Dakota (Brock Boeser’s home) ranks fourth while Yale (Matthew Beattie) takes the 12th spot.
ECHL
No ECHL updates this week; we’ll continue with those once the Utica Comets have sorted their training camp out and assign some of the organization’s prospects to Kalamazoo.
