It appears we’ve figured out which member of the Vancouver Canucks is the biggest fan of the team re-signing Tyler Myers.
Shortly after the Canucks announced on Thursday afternoon that they had agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension with Myers, goaltender Thatcher Demko took to Instagram to express his approval of the new deal.
“Best day of my life!!” Demko wrote, along with the graphic the Canucks created to announce the Myers contract.
Myers, 34, is coming off his strongest season as a Canuck. The Houston, Texas product amassed five goals and 29 points while averaging 18:56 of ice time in 77 games with the Canucks during the 2023-24 regular season; he added one assist in 12 games with Vancouver in the 2024 playoffs.
Demko has every right to be happy about the Canucks running it back with the same defensive group after it helped him post the best numbers of his career in the 2023-24 season. The 28-year-old netminder went 35-14-2 with a .918 save percentage in 51 games with the Canucks in 2023-24, and had he not suffered an injury in Game 1 against the Nashville Predators, the Canucks would’ve stood a better chance of getting past the Edmonton Oilers in Round 2.
At 6’8″ and 220 pounds, Myers is one of the tallest players in National Hockey League history. His new contract runs through 2027 and carries a $3 million cap hit and includes a full no-movement clause for the first two years.
The Canucks have been extremely active over the past few days, trading Ilya Mikheyev and Sam Lafferty to the Chicago Blackhawks and re-signing Teddy Blueger, Dakota Joshua, and now Myers. However, they will not make a pick until the third round of the 2024 NHL Draft.
Myers is five games shy of reaching 1,000 in his career. He has scored 93 goals and 371 points in 995 games over parts of 15 seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, Winnipeg Jets, and Canucks.
