Former Canucks forward Alex Chiasson signs PTO with Arizona Coyotes

Alex Chiasson, who spent the 2021–22 season with the Vancouver Canucks, has reportedly signed a professional tryout contract with the Arizona Coyotes.

CapFriendly reported the news of Chiasson’s PTO in the desert on Wednesday afternoon.

Chiasson scored 13 goals and 22 points in 67 games with the Canucks last season. He originally signed in Vancouver after a successful tryout during the Canucks’ 2021 training camp.

The Dallas Stars originally selected Chiasson in the second round (No. 38 overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft. The 6’4″ winger debuted with the Stars in the 2012–13 season, scoring six goals in his first seven NHL games.

Chiasson’s tenure in Dallas ended after two seasons when the Ottawa Senators acquired him as part of the Jason Spezza blockbuster trade. But Chiasson struggled to find his game in two seasons with the Sens and found himself on the move again in 2016, this time to the Calgary Flames.

After just one season in Calgary, Chiasson wound up attending the Washington Capitals’ 2017 training camp on a PTO. He successfully parlayed the tryout into a contract and won the Stanley Cup with the team.

Chiasson then attended the Edmonton Oilers’ 2018 training camp, again without a contract. But he ended up signing with the Oilers and scored a career-high 22 goals in 2018–19, ultimately remaining in Edmonton for three seasons.

In 631 career NHL regular-season games with Dallas, Ottawa, Calgary, Washington, Edmonton, and Vancouver, Chiasson has scored 114 goals and 224 points.

Chiasson will attempt to extend his career with a Coyotes team that needs help on the wings. He’ll likely have to beat out one of Nick Ritchie, Christian Fischer, Zack Kassian, and Liam O’Brien for a job in Arizona this season.
