With just one more sleep until the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline, there’s that famous buzz around the league of general managers making calls in an effort to get those last-minute deals done. And right now, it seems Vancouver Canucks GM Patrik Allvin is one who’s phone may be ringing off the hook.
According to TSN insider Darren Dreger, there is growing interest around the league in acquiring veteran defenceman Carson Soucy from Vancouver, with “a lot of teams calling” about him.
Dreger notes that he has trade protection, referring to his contract’s full no-movement clause, meaning he would need to sign off on any potential deal, though that may be becoming increasingly likely. After Soucy debuted at 10th on the February 21st edition of Frank Seravalli’s Trade Targets board on Daily Faceoff, he climbed to eighth last Friday, as more pieces from the list continue to be dealt. On Soucy, Seravalli writes:
Vancouver sent all 31 clubs a memo on Feb. 3 notifying them that Soucy was available. One issue: Soucy has a full ‘no-trade’ clause. Uninterested in leaving posthaste, Soucy decided that he wanted to take a couple weeks to try and get his game in order in Vancouver and see if he could rebound from what he admitted has been a tough year. Then the 4 Nations break hit. Soucy can see the writing on the wall and a healthy scratch on the horizon, and he wants to play. He’s a super attractive trade chip if the Canucks retain salary.
Soucy has been a healthy scratch once since the 4 Nations break but added some heat to his name Wednesday night, scoring the game-winning goal against the Anaheim Ducks in a close 3-2 contest.
The 6’5″, 208 lb defenceman currently has one year remaining on his contract with an annual cap hit of $3,250,000. Vancouver has a bit of wiggle room with their cap to play with, to help facilitate Soucy’s movement to an organization looking to add depth to their blue line without breaking the bank.
Soucy was drafted in the fifth round in the 2013 entry draft by the Minnesota Wild and is now playing in his sixth season in the NHL. Since signing a three-year, $9.75 million contract with Vancouver on July 1st, 2023, he has 16 points in 99 games.
With the growing interest around the league after Brian Dumoulin was traded to the New Jersey Devils, the Canucks will have until tomorrow’s 12 PM PST trade deadline to decide what they will do with Soucy. He will have the last say, as he has a full no-trade clause.
