It’s a disappointing end to the season for the Vancouver Canucks, as they missed the postseason following a breakthrough year in 2023-24. With only a couple of games left, all eyes in Vancouver are now turning to how to improve the group going into next season.
In an article from Sportnet’s Iain MacIntyre, Canucks GM Patrik Allvin spoke about the team’s plans for the offseason, as they look to build off the pieces they already have to field a competitive team:
“We have some really good building blocks here with the young players in the pipeline. I’m pleased with our goalie situation and I’m pleased with our back end. Our focus here is to see if we can improve our forwards group by either trades or free agents.”
While the Canucks had some bad luck on the back end this season, with a number of injuries to starting goaltender Thatcher Demko as well as all across their blue line, they do have a solid future there when at full strength. However, with the departure of JT Miller, Brock Boeser unlikely to re-sign with Vancouver, and only defenceman Quinn Hughes sitting above 50 points with three games left, there’s no denying the team could use some offensive firepower as they move forward.
A number of big names are set to hit the market this summer, and if Boeser walks, it opens up some cap room for the team in pursuing one of these targets, especially with the salary cap set to go up. There has also been some discussion about what the Canucks may be able to offer in a trade this summer, including if their top picks in the 2025 draft could possibly be on the table.
As Allvin prepares to call in some backup this offseason, it’s clear he’s also sticking by the foundation of the team he’s already built, showing he has confidence they can bounce back next year with the right kind of support.
