While the country basks in the glow of Thursday’s incredible 6-0 rout of Qatar by the Canadian Men’s National Soccer team at BC Place, it got us at CanucksArmy wondering about how many 6-0 shutout wins the home team has posted across the street at Rogers Arena. The answer, as it turns out, is three. The Vancouver Canucks also recorded a 6-0 victory at Pacific Coliseum before moving to their current downtown location.
The most recent 6-0 win wasn’t all that recent. You have to go back to December of 2011 when the Canucks defeated the Colorado Avalanche. Like Jonathan David yesterday, Daniel Sedin had a hat-trick that night, and his line with Henrik and Alex Burrows combined for eight points. Jannik Hansen scored twice, and Alex Edler had the other goal. Roberto Luongo started the game, but gave way to Cory Schneider midway through the second period after Luongo was stung by a shot and had to leave the game. Luongo stopped 13 shots while Schneider turned aside all 20 that he faced for the shared shutout. The game featured all four goalies, as Colorado starter Semyon Varlamov got shelled for six goals before being replaced by backup Jean-Sebastien Giguere.
Vancouver opened the 2008-09 season with a 6-0 romp over Calgary at Rogers Arena. Alex Burrows scored twice that night, while Henrik Sedin, Steve Bernier, Mattias Ohlund and Rick Rypien had the others. New General Manager Ryan Johnson had an assist on the second Burrows goal. Roberto Luongo made 25 saves on the night while Miikka Kiprusoff was on the hook for all six Canucks goals in the Calgary net.
The other 6-0 Canucks win at Rogers Arena came on March 23, 2003, when the home team defeated the Washington Capitals. Alex Auld needed just 14 saves for the shutout. Todd Bertuzzi collected a pair of goals with singles from Markus Naslund, Daniel Sedin, Matt Cooke and Brent Sopel. Olaf Kolzig allowed three goals on 23 shots through the first two periods and was replaced in the Caps’ net by Sebastien Charpentier, who also surrendered three goals over the final 20 minutes.
The only 6-0 win the Canucks ever posted in all their years at Pacific Coliseum was on November 10, 1991, when they beat the New York Islanders. Jim Sandlak opened the scoring, and the Canucks also got goals from Geoff Courtnall, Igor Larionov, Greg Adams, Cliff Ronning and Gino Odjick. Kirk McLean made 28 saves in the Canucks net while Glenn Healy went the distance in net for the Isles.
Of course, those are the only 6-0 home wins in Canucks history. They have also recorded a number of shutouts with larger margins than six goals. The team record is an 11-0 win over Calgary in the spring of 1992. They also pelted Edmonton 9-0 later that same year. Their largest margin of victory in a shutout at Rogers Arena came in an 8-0 win over the Atlanta Thrashers in February 2003.
In all, the Canucks have registered 13 shutouts by six goals or more on home ice through the years.
