In what was a dark 2024-25 season for the Vancouver Canucks, the bright spot of the season was the Abbotsford Canucks and their Calder Cup Championship. But the players are still waiting for their memorabilia from the accomplishment.
According to multiple reports, the Calder Cup-winning players from that Championship run have still not received their Championship rings.
Donnie & Dhali’s Rick Dhaliwal appeared on Halford & Brough in the Morning on Sportsnet 650 and first reported the news:
“Also, not sure why, it’s almost Christmas, and the Abbotsford players still have not received their Championship rings from winning the Calder Cup last year. You would think that would have been done by now. What the hell is going on there? Get those guys their rings. They deserve it for winning the Calder Cup.”
Ben Lypka, Abbotsford The News reporter, further elaborated with a discussion with the team regarding the matter a few weeks back, but the team has since gone quiet:
“The News initially reached out to Abbotsford Canucks management for information about potential championship rings on Nov. 26, with team management stating they’d need to have an internal discussion before answering. On Dec. 5, they said a reply would be given in one week’s time, but communication stopped after that last message.”
You can read Lypka’s full story here.
Abbotsford Head Coach Manny Malhotra joined John Shannon and Landon Ferraro on September 19 during Canucks training camp in Penticton to discuss his coaching philosophies, player development and of course, the Calder Cup Championship run.
At the end of the interview, Shannon asked Malhotra (29:23) when he’s getting his Calder Cup ring, to which Malhotra answered: “I have no idea.”
Abbotsford started its season on the road, in Henderson, Nevada and Laval, Quebec. They returned to the Abbotsford Centre – now the Rogers Forum – on October 24, where they held their banner-raising night. Captain Chase Wouters brought the Calder Cup onto the ice, but no rings were distributed to the players. Lypka confirmed that while teams sometimes hold a private ceremony unveiling the rings, his sources say that has not happened yet.
We are now nearly six months (179 days) since Abbotsford lifted the trophy over their heads in Charlotte, and are without the memorabilia that comes with said honour.
UPDATE:
Bob Marjanovich of the Black Press shared that the Championship rings have been ordered, but are late. January 7 is the reported ETA.
UPDATE x2:
The Canucks sent out the following statement late Friday afternoon:
Winning the Calder Cup was a monumental achievement for the entire organization, and celebrating it with our players, staff, incredible fans, and the Abbotsford community has been truly special. From hosting a Calder Cup Celebration in the summer to kicking off the season with Banner Raising Night, it’s been important to us to honour an exceptional group and a historic championship that unites our community.Calder Cup championship rings are the final piece of that celebration. A tremendous amount of thought and care went into their design, as they represent a piece of history the players will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Extensive time and attention were dedicated to their creation to ensure this moment is celebrated in a way that truly reflects the significance of the achievement. We’re excited to share them with the team in the New Year and look forward to continuing to celebrate this remarkable moment in our history together.
