The Vancouver Canucks organization made a pair of roster moves on Monday, highlighted by veteran defenceman Jett Woo being placed on waivers for assignment to Abbotsford. Shortly before that news surfaced, the Abbotsford Canucks announced that goaltender Ty Young had been reassigned to the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL.
Young, 21, is in his second professional season and will look to reset his game after a difficult start in his first official season in the American League. The Calgary-born netminder put together an encouraging rookie campaign last year, posting a .926 save percentage and two shutouts across 22 games with Kalamazoo, while also going 8-3-0 during his stint with Abbotsford. That strong debut earned him a longer look at the AHL level this season, but the results haven’t gone his way out of the gate.
Through seven starts, Young has yet to record a win and carries a 0-7-0 record along with a 4.75 goals against average and a .840 save percentage. Two of those outings saw him allow seven goals. While the numbers are tough, context matters: Abbotsford has struggled significantly as a group, sitting 30th in the 32-team league. The club has allowed a league-high 93 goals while scoring just 46 — also sitting 30th in the AHL — leaving none of the four goaltenders with league-average metrics.
Young now joins a Kalamazoo team that has also faced early-season difficulties, currently ranking 28th in the ECHL standings. The move provides him with an opportunity to regain confidence and return to the form he showed last season. His first chance to suit up for the team will come on Wednesday as the team hosts the Bloomington Bisons.
With Young heading to the ECHL, Abbotsford will continue with the tandem of Aku Koskenvuo and Jiri Patera. Despite earning only one win so far, rookie netminder Koskenvuo has held his own in limited action. For now, at least while Nikita Tolopilo remains in Vancouver, he looks to have earned the trust of Manny Malhtra as the second anchor of the two-man rotation in Abbotsford.
