The Abbotsford Canucks get a second shot at getting their hands on the Calder Cup tonight when they face the Charlotte Checkers in Game 6 of the American Hockey League Finals at Bojangles Arena.
The Canucks lead the series 3-2, but the Checkers hope they have momentum on their side after a 4-3 overtime win on Saturday at Abbotsford Centre.
What we know
Abbotsford has been remarkable in these playoffs in games following losses. The Canucks are 7-0 when coming off a setback. Tonight, they will try to avoid their first back to back losses of the postseason.
Linus Karlsson scored twice on Saturday giving him an AHL leading 13 goals and 25 points in the playoffs. Arshdeep Bains had the team’s other goal and has now scored seven times in the last seven outings. Their line with Max Sasson combined for 16 shots on goal led by Karlsson with eight. Sammy Blais saw his five game point streak come to an end. The veteran winger was held without a shot on goal for the first time in the series.
Abbotsford scored a pair of goals at 4-on-4 and another with a two-man advantage, but did not generate a 5-on-5 goal in the game.
Arturs Silovs stopped 36 of 40 Charlotte shots on Saturday. It was the first time since Game 4 of the previous round against Texas that the Canucks netminder allowed four goals in a game. Tonight will be his 24th straight postseason start.
The Canucks are 5-5 on the road during these playoffs. That includes a split of the first two games in Charlotte 10 days ago. The team is also 4-4 in games decided in overtime in the playoffs.
The opponent
Jesse Puljujarvi’s first goal of the final at 15:22 of overtime on Saturday extended the series and kept the Checkers alive. The veteran winger had a goal and an assist on the night. Ben Steeves, Brett Chorske and Rasmus Asplund had Charlotte’s other goals.
The Checkers held a 40-32 edge in shots on goal.
Justin Sourdif (1+3) and Matt Kierstad (0+4) share the team lead in scoring in this series. Through five games, Oliver Okuliar is the only Checker to score two goals. They have 11 other skaters who have scored once. John Leonard leads the series with 20 shots on goal.
Kaapo Kahkonen made 29 saves for his 12th win of the playoffs. After allowing a pair of goals just over a minute apart early in the second period, the Checkers puck stopper did not surrender another goal over the final 50:11 he played.
Charlotte went one for two on the power play, has now scored with the man advantage in consecutive games and has four power play goals in the past four contests.
The Checkers are 6-3 on home ice in the playoffs outscoring their opponents 28-20.

Abbotsford is 6/18 on the power play in the series while Charlotte is 4/19. Goals at 5-on-5 are even at 9 each. Linus Karlsson and Arshdeep Bains share the series scoring lead with four goals and eight points apiece. Charlotte holds a 199-127 edge in shots on goal.
Tonight’s game starts at 4pm Pacific time. If necessary, Game 7 is set for Wednesday in Charlotte.
