Quinn Hughes has already cemented his spot as the greatest defencemen to ever play for the Vancouver Canucks. And his next point will make him the highest-scoring blueliner in franchise history. The 25-year-old finished the 2024-25 National Hockey League season tied with Alex Edler with 409 career points. So early next season – likely on opening night – Hughes will produce the point needed to surge into top spot on his own.
And it’s certainly not out of the question that Hughes could reach the double-500 milestone next season. He needs 91 points to get to 500 for his incredible career. Remember, he had 92 points a season ago en route to his first Norris Trophy. Hughes also needs 67 games to reach 500 games played.
If he plays all 82 games next season, Hughes will nudge past former defensive partner Chris Tanev into 10th all time in games played by a Canucks defender.
But Hughes means so much more to the Canucks than simply how he stacks up against others that have played the same position. With his dazzling array of skills, the captain continues to climb the ranks among all time Canucks regardless of where they play on the ice.
Entering his seventh full NHL season, Hughes has a share of 14th in all-time franchise scoring. He needs 11 points to catch Bo Horvat (420) and 28 points to match JT Miller (437). Hughes starts the season 40 points behind Todd Bertuzzi, who currently occupies 10th place in franchise point production.
Brock Boeser (434) will likely pass Bertuzzi before Hughes does, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone if by season’s end Hughes has reeled in Boeser, too.
In fact, with an average season – by his standards – Hughes has a legitimate shot to move past both Tony Tanti (470) and Pavel Bure (478) and into the top eight all time in franchise scoring. At that point, he will be left with only the greatest players in Canucks history in front of him – the Sedins, Markus Naslund, Trevor Linden, Stan Smyl, Thomas Gradin, and quite likely Elias Pettersson, who starts next season with a 48-point lead on Hughes.
The Orlando, Florida, native already sits seventh in franchise assists with 350. With 65 helpers next season, Hughes will join Trevor Linden in third spot on the Canucks all time list with 415. It should be noted that Linden has played 707 more games as a Canuck than Hughes has.
When it comes to goals, Hughes scored 16 goals in his 68 games last season. He was on pace for his first 20-goal season before injuries limited his second-half production. Still, he sits sixth among all defencemen to ever wear a Canucks uniform and will climb that ladder next season. He is six behind Doug Lidster and 15 back of Jyrki Lumme. A franchise record 24 goals from a defenceman next season would move Hughes into a tie for third all-time with Sami Salo at 83. At that point, only Alex Edler (99) and Mattias Ohlund (93) would be ahead of him.
And at some point midseason, Hughes will register the 1,000th shot of his career. He will begin next season with 925 to this point in his career. Only six other defencemen in franchise history have recorded 1,000 shots on goal. While he’s tied in points with Edler, Hughes has plenty of ground to cover to catch The Eagle who fired 2,021 shots on net over his Canucks career.
The hope for both Hughes and his hockey club is that the Canucks return to the playoffs next season. Hughes doesn’t have a huge postseason resume, yet unsurprisingly, he has been productive in his two looks at Stanley Cup action. With 26 points in 30 career games, Hughes is already tied for 18th in franchise scoring and 10th all-time with 24 assists. If Hughes managed to pick up 14 playoff points, he’d move all the way into a share of seventh in franchise playoff scoring with 40 points. And 11 more assists and he’d be in solo fourth in that category.
While there is still considerable uncertainty about what the Canucks may look like next season, there is very little doubt that Quinn Hughes will lead by example and be the offensive engine for the hockey club. And every point he picks up will add to his remarkable totals as he continues to rewrite the franchise record book.
