JetsNation discusses Tyler Myers

With speculation swirling around the Canucks being interested in unrestricted free agent defenceman Tyler Myers, we looked to our friends at JetsNation to let us know about the season that the big, 29-year-old had in 2018-19. Here’s what they had to say:

With rumours swirling around Tyler Myers, nobody knows where he’s going to end up next season. Does that mean he’s played his last game in Winnipeg? While that’s definitely a possibility, we will have to wait until next week to know for certain. In the meantime let’s take a look at his past season in today’s Pilot’s Logbook.

On the surface, it was another average season for Tyler Myers. Almost everything he did fell exactly in line with what we should expect given his history in the NHL. He scored 31 points, which is roughly average for his career. He played 20:21 per game which is slightly lower than any of his previous seasons, but nothing truly out of the ordinary.

Even when looking at the advanced stats, they look fairly consistent to prior years. He finished the year near the middle of the pack with an on-ice xGoals% of 47.4%. He also finished near the middle of the squad in SCF% with 47.82%. All of these average numbers coincide with his shot maps as both offensively and defensively he was slightly below average.

It seems as though the future is going to be awfully rich for Tyler Myers. Some people reported Myers was looking for a possible deal worth around $8 million per season. If you think that’s far too much, you’re right.

Quote from the full article “In the defensive end, Myers is flat out bad. He often has trouble defending in the crease because opposing players are able to get position on him in front of the net and box him out. Sometimes the tall frame can be a hindrance, and trying to get around other players showcases that difficulty. If someone gets on the inside of Myers, they will likely beat him to the spot and Myers has to rely on his long reach to knock the puck away.

To make matters worse, Myers gives up far too many turnovers in his own end. It seems like a struggle to get the puck out whenever he and Kulikov were on the ice together. The last thing to mention about Myers’ defensive ability is that sometimes he just forgets to play hockey.” Jim, please just say no to Myers!

The more I read about Myers and the more I think about the pressure ownership is putting on this management group to make the playoffs, the more I get really, really nervous about July 1st. Benning is in a rough spot, he’s screwed if he signs Myers to a huge deal and he’s screwed if he doesn’t, you know that Aquilini is all over him to make the playoffs and with him being on the last year of his contract….well, that doesn’t bode well.

I fully support the idea of surrounding our current young core with quality players so that we don’t waste their best years, but we also need to support the idea of being patient and that we aren’t quite at the level where we can add UFAs like this just yet.

How pissed do you think that Edler would be that after all his years of being here that he took a hometown discount to stay and then they give a guy that is a second pairing defenseman an outrageous salary?

God, I hope GMJB does not sign this guy for the dollars that are being discussed in the media. If Gudbranson was bad at $4M/yr, what the heck makes Myers worth $6M+/yr. Who in their right mind pays that kind of money for a, to be charitable, #4 d-man who is 29 y/o?

People talk about the stupid money being thrown at ‘high end’ forwards like Stone, Staal, etc., but the dollars talked about for Myers are insane for what he is.

Ditto, I will be more incline to put this signing on Aquillini rather than on JB.
I still hope the sting of the LE situation will prevent this type of signing with the Canucks tomorrow and in the future; unless the core is really competitive then why not. Also, I am hoping that this is just a smokescreen for a more reasonable signing tomorrow.

Wow, another Gudbransson but for more money! But this is what JB does best. Ship him out of town already, I am so pissed… Ownership will never win a cup with this type of approach and fans have to suffer year in and year out…
