So I can’t help but notice that Sean Monahan has both drastically improved his underlying numbers so far this season, but is also scoring at a 31 goal pace.

Glen Healy said Gaudreau doesn’t deserve the nickname Johnny Hockey. Well Gaudreau is +10, has 14 points in the last 15 games, and is 2nd in the NHL in takeaways. Eat that crow, Healy. Chew it good.

Markus Granlund (who led AHL rookie scoring last season until his call-up) now has 9 points in 10 games this season.

The jury is still out on Sven Baertschi and Michael Ferland, but man, they both have absolutely tremendous ceilings. We all know Baertschi’s incredible skill set, but Ferland is one of those rare characters who has the potential to be a legitimate NHL power forward. Not a “uses his size and strength to protect the puck” kind of guy. But a “uses his size and strength to ****ing smash people on his way to the net where he scores” kind of player.

I don’t care what the standings show. I don’t care where the Flames finish the season. The Flames’ season was about developing prospects, and having guys take the next step. That has happened in a big way, and incidentally it has helped them win games. Whether or not their winning ways are sustainable is missing the point. This season is a complete success, full stop, and finishing in a playoff spot has nothing to do with it.
