For the second consecutive day, the Vancouver Canucks traded away a long-tenured defenceman in the organization.
Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced they have sent defenceman Jett Woo to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenceman Jack Thompson.
Woo, 25, was drafted by the Canucks in the second round (37th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft. After two strong seasons following his draft year, scoring 19 goals and 93 assists for 112 points in 126 games with the Moose Jaw Warriors and Calgary Hitmen, Woo turned pro and joined the American ranks for the 2020-21 season.
The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native was one of the original Abbotsford Canucks when the team moved out West from Utica. Throughout the first three seasons in Abbotsford, Woo played a defensive-minded leadership role, adding 16 goals and 44 assists for 60 points in 172 AHL games.
In 2024-25, Woo formed a shutdown pairing with Guillaume Brisebois, with Christian Wolanin, Victor Mancini, and Kirill Kudryavtsev as the blueliners who provided offence. Woo still managed to score a pair of goals and chipped in wth 16 assists in 67 regular season games with a plus-14 rating. The right-shot defenceman’s defensive habits helped the Abbotsford Canucks claim their first Calder Cup Championship in franchise history in 2024-25.
After the successful Calder Cup run, Woo started the 2025-26 season on injured reserve with a hand injury. He made his season debut in mid-December and has since tallied one goal and seven assists for eight points in 26 games, with 78 penalty minutes.
Despite being in the Canucks organization for the past six seasons, Woo never appeared in any NHL action. Throughout his time with the Canucks, Woo scored 22 goals and 69 assists for 91 points with 410 penalty minutes in 293 AHL games.
Thompson, 23, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the third round (93rd overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft. After two seasons in the Lightning’s AHL affiliate, Syracuse Crunch, where he scored 13 goals and 42 assists for 55 points in 117 games. He made his NHL debut in 2023-24 with the Lightning, but was then traded to the Sharks, along with a 2024 third-round pick (traded), in exchange for Anthony Duclair. Thompson appeared in two NHL games with the Sharks that season, but was held without a point.
The following season, Thompson got more runway in the NHL, appearing in 31 games for the Sharks, scoring four goals and six assists for 10 points. The 6’1″ right-shot defenceman has played the entire year in the AHL this season, scoring three goals and nine assists for 12 points with a plus-13 rating.
Allvin thanked Woo for his time with the organization and welcomed Thompson in his press release:
“Jett was a key part of our AHL championship winning team and we would like to thank him for all that he has done for the Canucks organization,” said Allvin. “Bringing in Jack will add to our organizational depth on the blueline, and we look forward to working with him in Abbotsford.”
