Vancouver Canucks forward J.T. Miller appeared shaken up during the opening faceoff of Saturday night’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers.
After his first shift on the ice, Miller headed down the tunnel to the locker room but managed to return later and help contribute to the Canucks’ 3-0 victory.
Following the game, Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet addressed Miller’s situation.
“He’s dealing with some stuff. We’ll figure it out in the next couple of days, but we didn’t want him to take faceoffs.”
Upon his return, Miller lined up for just one more faceoff and didn’t take any additional draws for the rest of the game. In his place, Brock Boeser went 3-for-7 in the faceoff circle, while Jake DeBrusk lost the two draws he took. Tocchet lightheartedly joked at Boeser’s unexpected success, as Boeser went 3-for-3 to start the game in the dot.
“He got cocky and thought he was Bergeron or something,” Tocchet said. “You have to go through those situations.”
Although Miller didn’t have his usual point-producing performance, he still made an impact on the game.
“He played well for us, even though he wasn’t taking faceoffs,” Tocchet said, acknowledging Miller’s contribution despite his adjusted role. Miller logged 17 minutes of ice time, recording one shot, three hits, a +1 rating, and some time on the penalty kill against the Flyers.
When asked about Miller’s potential absence, Tocchet didn’t expect the 31-year-old to miss significant time.
“I expect him to be at practice today, but you never know. We’ll see how it is,” Tocchet said. “He’ll probably get a couple of days off to rest, and we’ll see where it goes from there.”
The Canucks picked up their second win of the season and now sit at 2-1-2 after five games, good for 5th in the Pacific division with 6 points. They’ll wrap up their four-game road trip in Chicago against the Blackhawks on Tuesday.
