The Vancouver Canucks have signed left shot defenceman Derek Forbort to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million. Frank Seravalli first reported the deal, and Canucks GM Patrik Allvin announced the contract just before 10 AM Pacific.
Forbort, 32, is a defence-first penalty killing defenceman who spent the past three seasons with the Boston Bruins. Forbort profiles very similarly to Ian Cole, who signed a one-year deal with Utah HC for $3.1 million earlier today. Both players are excellent penalty killers, don’t have much offence to give, and are very defensively sound.
Forbort is a 5/6 defenceman through and through, and should bring some Cole-like stability to the Canucks’ third pair and penalty kill this upcoming season.
Derek Forbort, signed 1x$1.5M by VAN, is a physical third-pairing defenceman. A bit turnover-prone, which made many fans dislike him in Boston, but also a great penalty killer and strong chance suppressor. BOS gave up basically no oddman or cross-slot chances with him on the ice.
Forbort is the Canucks’ fourth signing of the day, as they’ve already signed Kiefer Sherwood and Danton Heinen to two-year deals to go along with a seven-year deal for Jake DeBrusk.
After Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov signed in Boston, the Canucks have now signed three players who were on the Bruins this past season, for those keeping track at home.
