There were a good number of trades in the lead-up to the pick, but the Vancouver Canucks have made their second first-round pick of the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.
With the 24th overall selection, the Canucks selected sharpshooting winger Adam Novotny. Novotny tallied 34 goals and 31 assists through 58 games with the OHL’s Peterborough Petes this past season.
Here is what we wrote about Novotny in a mid-season scouting report:
“Draft eligible or not, certain players immediately look pro-ready. Adam Novotny, a sizeable winger from Czechia, fits that description. At 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, his game comes with a ton of size that is complemented by fluid skating and a hefty release.Selected ninth overall by the Peterborough Petes in the 2024 CHL Import Draft, Novotny has burst onto the OHL scene, posting 19 goals and 35 points in just 29 games to lead his team. Beyond the production and obvious size advantage, it’s his competitive edge that stands out most. He works hard on pucks, drives the middle of the ice, and finishes plays with a legitimate release.Novotny plays with pace and purpose, and his versatility gives him a strong chance to climb draft boards as the season progresses. There’s a realistic scenario where he plays himself out of the 15–32 range entirely. But if he’s still available, the Canucks could grab some serious value here.”
The San Jose Sharks, who already selected Ivar Stenberg second overall and Keaton Verhoeff ninth overall, traded up six spots to 21st overall to select Richmond-born Vancouver Giants defenceman Ryan Lin. A smooth-skating right-shot defenceman, Lin was looking like a great option for the Canucks to consider with the 24th overall pick after taking centre Caleb Malhotra third overall. Liam Ruck, whose twin brother Markus is expected to be drafted early in the day tomorrow, went 22nd overall to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Canucks don’t have any more picks in the first round, but will kick off the festivities tomorrow morning when they select with the 33rd overall pick. Be sure to keep it locked right here on CanucksArmy for all your Vancouver Canucks draft coverage needs!
