The Vancouver Canucks have ruled out two-thirds of their top line as Elias Pettersson and Nils Höglander will not return for the third period against the New York Rangers.
The Canucks had dominated play through the opening two periods, outshooting the Rangers 10-1 in the opening 20 and followed that up with a 13-5 advantage in the middle frame.
Pettersson briefly left the bench and went back to the locker room in the second period after an awkward play in the faceoff circle.
After being waved out of the draw, the centreman looked to be in some discomfort as he headed back to the point. He would return but play just two shifts in the final 10 minutes, one 23-second shift and a 30-second shift.
It has not been confirmed when or how Höglander was injured.
The injuries come amid point streaks for the two Swedish forwards.
Pettersson came into today’s game riding a six-game point streak, scoring three goals and six assists for nine points.
Höglander came into today’s game with points in four of his last five games, with one goal and five assists for six points.
The duo were playing on a line with Brock Boeser, who found his scoring touch again after going goalless in 12 straight games. He scored a pair of goals in back-to-back games, including a last-second howitzer from the right wing against the St. Louis Blues to earn the Canucks an important point in their hunt for the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.
The extent of the injuries are unknown. However, if they are to miss time, the Canucks will need to summon a player from AHL Abbotsford, as the club has just 11 healthy forwards on the roster, with Filip Chytil not available with a concussion.
The Canucks have a quick turnaround as they continue their road trip, facing off against the New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Columbus Blue Jackets and Winnipeg Jets. And they may have to do so without the likes of Elias Pettersson and Nils Höglander.
