Six hours after making a handful of transactions, the Vancouver Canucks announced they have recalled forward Nils Aman and defenceman Tom Willander. In the same transaction, Jimmy Schuldt, who was recalled earlier on Monday morning, has been assigned back to AHL Abbotsford.
Willander was drafted by the Canucks in the first round (11th overall) of the 2023 NHL draft. He spent his draft-plus-one and draft-plus-two seasons in the NCAA, playing for the Boston University Terriers. In his two seasons at Boston University, Willander scored six goals and 43 assists for 49 points with a combined plus-47 rating in 77 NCAA games. His efforts in the 2024-25 season helped the Terriers advance to the NCAA tournament finals, where they lost 6-2 to the Western Michigan Broncos.
The Swedish defenceman signed his entry-level contract with the Canucks in mid-May and has now made the jump to the professional ranks. He appeared in three preseason games, but was held pointless and had a minus-one rating. Willander was one of the final cuts from the Canucks’ opening night roster and has spent the first four games in Abbotsford playing in a top-pairing role. After being held pointless through his first three games, he potted his first professional goal against the Henderson Silver Knights.
Aman has been with the Canucks organization for the past four seasons, suiting up in 130 games, scoring eight goals and 21 assists for 29 points with a minus-17 rating while averaging 11:36 minutes of ice time. He has spent the start of this season centring Abbotsford’s first line, picking up three assists, but has a minus-five rating.
Schuldt was called up on Monday morning in what now appears to be a paper transaction in order to maximize their LTIR pool. He will return to Abbotsford, where he is still looking for his first point in a Canucks uniform, carrying a minus-two rating, four penalty minutes and five shots on goal.
With the Canucks’ laundry list of injuries (Filip Chytil, Jonathan Lekkerimäki, Teddy Blueger, Nils Höglander and Derek Forbort), and Brock Boeser out due to personal reasons, both Aman and Willander will have an opportunity to slide into the Canucks lineup as early as Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
