Over the weekend, a Vancouver Canucks prospect posted a unique stat line.

On Saturday, Canucks prospect Basile Sansonnens finished his game against HC Davos with zero goals, zero assists, one shot on goal, a minus-one rating, and 50 penalty minutes. Yes, you read that correctly: 50 penalty minutes.

Sansonnens lays a dangerous hit, making direct contact with the opposing players numbers on the back of his jersey. A classic no-no in hockey and the reason you’ll see a stop sign on the back of most youth hockey jerseys.

Immediately following the hit, Sansonnens was forced to pay up for the play. HC Davos forward and former NHLer Brendan Lemieux dropped the gloves and went after Sansonnens. He was awarded 27 penalty minutes for his actions, all listed as fighting.

The breakdown of the penalty minutes is certainly out of the ordinary and wouldn’t equate to 50 minutes had it been in an NHL game. Sansonnens was assessed a 20-minute and a five-minute penalty for boarding, along with another 20-minute and five-minute penalty for fighting.

The play certainly didn’t look good, but walking away with almost a full game’s worth of penalty minutes surely is an irregular feat. Interestingly enough, though, if this total had occurred in the NHL, Sansonnens would rank tied for 8th in the single-game penalty-minute record, according to NHL records. Randy Holt of the Los Angeles Kings holds the record, racking up 67 total penalty minutes  – a 10 PIM gap on second – on nine penalties in a game on March 11, 1979, against the Philadelphia Flyers.

It’s not the incredible stat we’d want to see from a Canucks prospect. However, aside from that one incident, Sansonnens has kept it clean, with no other penalties, while adding two goals to his total this season.

Through just five games, he’s already broken his career highs in goals (two) and penalty minutes (50) in a single Swiss Hockey League season.
