The Vancouver Canucks have placed defenceman Noah Juulsen on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks, general manager Patrik Allvin announced Thursday morning.

Juulsen, along with Aatu Räty, Christian Wolanin, and Vasily Podkolzin were papered down to the Abbotsford Canucks ahead of the March 3rd trade deadline, making all of them eligible to play in the Calder Cup Playoffs with Abbotsford. In the case of Wolanin, Juulsen, and Phil Di Giuseppe, however, they will need to clear waivers in order to be sent down.

Clearly, the Canucks felt safe taking that risk with Juulsen, but will they feel the same way about making Wolanin and Di Giuseppe available to teams around the league for free?

Juulsen has served as a bit of a stop gap on the right side of the Canucks’ defence since the club dealt Luke Schenn. Through 12 games with the Canucks this season, Juulsen has put up zero points but hasn’t necessarily looked out of place alongside Quinn Hughes. Juulsen has tallied three goals and 17 assists through 49 games with Abbotsford this season.

The Abbotsford Canucks shut out the league-leading Calgary Wranglers last night, with Arturs Silovs picking up the victory with goals from Jack Rathbone and Danila Klimovich helping them secure the 2-0 victory. Abbotsford has two more home games against Calgary before the Calder Cup Playoffs begin on April 19th. Unlike last year, Abbotsford secured home ice for round one, meaning all three games of their first round series will be played at home. For a refresher on the AHL playoffs format, click here.
