On Monday, fans noticed that Dale Tallon had been removed from the Vancouver Canucks‘ staff page. Tallon was previously listed as Senior Advisor of Hockey Operations and Professional Scout on the Canucks’ website.
On Tuesday afternoon, a Canucks spokesperson confirmed to CanucksArmy that Tallon’s contract is up at the end of June and that the club will not be renewing his deal.
Tallon was brought aboard by former President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford back in 2022. Before that, he served as the Florida Panthers’ General Manager from 2010-11 to 2019-20, and spent the previous decade with the Chicago Blackhawks in various roles, including GM from 2005-2019.
Tallon was the first draft pick in the Canucks’ NHL history, as the expansion Canucks infamously selected second overall after losing the spin of a carnival wheel to their expansion cousin, the Buffalo Sabres. Tallon, now 75, spent a decade in the NHL as a defenceman with the Canucks, Blackhawks, and Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Canucks haven’t made many other changes to their front office staff since naming Daniel and Henrik Sedin co-presidents of hockey operations and Ryan Johnson as general manager. Their scouting staff remains relatively unchanged on both the professional and amateur sides, but not renewing Tallon’s contract certainly falls under the category of change from the previous regime.
It’s already been a busy offseason for the Canucks’ new management group, as, on top of preparing for their first draft in less than a month, they introduced Manny Malhotra as head coach last week after firing previous bench boss Adam Foote shortly after their hiring. As is the case every year, management will have a quick turnaround from the draft on June 26th and 27th to NHL Free Agency, which kicks off on July 1st.
