The Vancouver Canucks have been missing players for some time, but the upcoming Olympic break gives them a chance to heal up and return to action on the other side of the break.
Following Wednesday night’s 5-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, Canucks Head Coach Adam Foote met with the media for the final time before teams could resume practicing on February 17. This sparked some questions regarding a handful of their injured players and what the expectations are for their availabilities after the break:
“All those guys you mentioned [Boeser, Buium, Rossi and Chytil], I expect them to be back for practice,” Foote shared.
“Zeev might be real close, but I think he’ll be skating.” … “I think Boeser started skating a little bit. He’s a pro. He’ll be good over the break, getting his ice time. We’ve got lots of time with this group coming back; we’ve got a lot of practice time.”
“I don’t think so,” Foote replied when asked if Chytil’s migraines would keep him out long term. “He’s going to see someone that’s dealt with other players with the same type of injury, migraines. A new doctor. Hopefully, we can get down to the bottom of it. He’ll have a week or so where they’re on and off, and then he doesn’t have them for a while. So, hopefully that can be found and corrected. I’m positive that it will.”
Buium, 20, has been out of the lineup since January 25, when he took a puck to the face against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He managed to finish the game with a bubble mask, but has not been in the lineup since with a facial fracture. In 20 games with the Canucks this season, Buium has two goals and four assists for six points, a minus-eight rating in 20:25 minutes of average ice time.
Boeser, 28, was also injured in the same game against the Penguins. As the Canucks attempted to mount a third-period comeback, Boeser was caught by Bryan Rust in the head at the net front. Rust was suspended and served his three-game suspension, while Boeser remains out of the lineup. On the season, Boeser has 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points with a minus-30 rating in over 19 minutes of ice time per game.
Chytil, 26, had to exit Monday night’s contest against the Utah Mammoth after two periods with what Foote first described as a tweak. The Canucks’ head coach later said Chytil was dealing with migraines and was unlikely to play in their final game on Wednesday night before the break. Chytil did not suit up and will now have an extra two weeks to rest before the Canucks hit the ice again on February 17 for practice at Rogers Arena before determining whether he’s ready for game action when the team returns on February 25 against the Winnipeg Jets.
Foote did not have any further updates on Rossi. The last we heard about Rossi was that the organization planned to take its time with the injury, not wanting to rush him back to action. There was no update on Nils Höglander, who did not join the team on this two-game road trip. Thatcher Demko has already been ruled out for the season. Derek Forbort has reportedly been skating but is considered unlikely to return this season.
