It’s been hectic news day for Adam Foote and the Vancouver Canucks, and not in a fun way.
Ahead of their game against the San Jose Sharks, Foote updated the assembled media on the status of Brock Boeser and Zeev Buium, neither of whom will dress against the Sharks due to injuries sustained in Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Buium will miss time with a fractured cheekbone, while Boeser is currently undergoing concussion protocol after taking an elbow to the head from Bryan Rust. The two are just the latest in a list of Canucks’ injuries this season, including the earlier announcement that Thatcher Demko will be shut down for the season to have hip surgery.
Buium’s injury came after being hit by a Tommy Novak shot midway through the first period. “I know it’s not the orbital bone where he does have a fracture in probably his high cheekbone,” Foote said. “The doctors don’t think it’s surgery, but he’s gonna get a second opinion in the next couple days.”
Buium returned to the game with a fishbowl visor to protect his face and wound up playing 15:41 in the 3-2 defeat. His coach praised the 20-year-old’s efforts to play through the injury.
“I really love his toughness,” Foote said of Buium. “Showed for a young guy coming back and playing like that. You could tell he wasn’t the same and now, I was talking to him yesterday, you break a bone under your eye and the swelling, at that age, you tell why it affected his game. What I like is his courage to play [with] an injury like that, shows great things for the future.”
Boeser’s status in concussion protocol will keep him out about a week, according to the Canucks coach. The elbow from Rust at the very end of the game resulted in a three-game suspension for the Penguins forward. But Foote said Boeser told him he felt “a lot better yesterday” and felt the end result wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been.
“He didn’t feel that affected his neck, which I wasn’t sure,” Foote said. “He got kind of hit at almost the same time from behind as well, so I was worried about his neck, but Brock’s tough. It was good news to hear him speak and say this isn’t as bad as what I had in the past, so that’s a good sign.”
In their place, Jonathan Lekkerimäki will take a turn in Boeser’s spot alongside Filip Chytil and Drew O’Connor, while PO Joseph enters the lineup for Buium, skating alongside Tyler Myers.
TSN’s Farhan Lalji added that Marco Rossi was trending well, but suffered a setback. The club is hoping he will return after the Olympic break.
