A familiar name is being considered for an important front office job in Vancouver.
According to Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie and Dhali – The Team, the Vancouver Canucks interviewed Patrick Burke for the open general manager position this week. While he didn’t provide any details of how things went, Dhaliwal noted that Burke is held in high regard across the NHL.
Burke, the son of former Canucks GM Brian Burke, is a candidate for the role that opened up after Vancouver fired former GM Patrik Allvin not long after the 2025-26 season came to a close.
Patrick Burke has been involved in the NHL ranks for decades. Along with being a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers for several seasons, he was hired as the league’s director of player safety in 2013. After a few years on the job, he was promoted to senior director of player safety in 2017, before becoming the vice president of player safety in the fall of 2021, a position he has held ever since.
Along with his work for the NHL, he was the president of You Can Play, a project co-founded by Patrick and his father from 2011 to 2017, which ensures safety and inclusion for hockey participants, most notably members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Per multiple reports, the Canucks have a shortlist of candidates that also include former NHLers Shane Doan and Ray Whitney, ex-Buffalo Sabers GM Kevyn Adams, and Edmonton Oilers assistant GM Bill Scott.
The latest campaign saw the Canucks have one of the worst performances in franchise history. The team finished with the fewest wins (25) in a “normal” season since the 1998-99 campaign, when Vancouver also finished with 58 points. The only silver lining is that the team clinched the worst record in the NHL and the best odds for the NHL Draft Lottery.
Thomas Drance of The Athletic noted that the Canucks are hoping they have a new GM in place by the time the lottery comes around, which is scheduled for May 5.
