Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning took questions from the media the other day in regards to the recent signings of Will Lockwood and Marc Michaelis.
Lockwoord, a third-round pick in 2016, played with the University of Michigan last year scoring nine goals and 23 points in 33 games.
Michaelis, meanwhile, played with Minnesota State University scoring 20 goals and 44 points in 31 games.
Here’s what Benning had to say.
On Lockwood:
We talked to Will last summer — we were going to try to sign him last summer. He was coming off shoulder surgery. He wanted to finish off his degree. He’s fast and plays with a lot of energy. He’s willing to get in on the forecheck, he’s physical and will hit. Part of his style of game is why he had some injuries the last few years. But, he’s a guy that we project with development that can come in and give us energy, he can kill penalites, he’s got a good release on his shot. He’s a guy we see as a top-nine forward… at worst a fourth-line energy guy that gives us speed and brings us some intangibles.
On Michaelis:
I would call in him a playmaking centre iceman. He’s a good skater, buys time with the puck, has good vision of the ice, makes other players around him better and he has good attention to detail in his game. We think he can develop into a penalty killer too for us because his attention to detail is good. He’s always on the right side of the puck. I’m excited about him becasue over the last four years he’s put up good numbers at the college level and plays a good 200-foot game.
