On Sunday, the Vancouver Canucks signed forward Nils Höglander to a three-year contract extension with an annual average value of $3 million. The deal is a bet on a player who potted 24 even-strength goals in 2024-25, and came into camp looking hungry and motivated to continue his progression as a reliable NHL scoring winger.
Canucks fans all over the internet weighed in. Here’s what they said. First, from the CanucksArmy content section:
CanucksArmy comment section:
Wilson: I like it. I agree that he’s got some more room to grow, he’s a fan favourite, can play up and down the lineup and is just a little ball of energy. Very useful player to have. Just makes me think about Podkolzin and how you really have to take into consideration personality and drive. On the face of it, Podz should be a more successful player – but when faced with adversity, Hoglander had something in him that was able to adapt and rebound, and Podz didn’t (or at least hasn’t yet).
John Bates: Players like Hogs don’t grow on trees, price seems fair with the cap increase projections. Good work!
defenceman factory: This management group has a plan. They sure don’t collect any dust. They are set up well to ice a good team for a few years. The OEL cap hit and Boeser contract are the next challenges but Allvin doesn’t seem to come at there things unprepared. One can never be sure how a player will do into the future but the bets they have made seem pretty good. The Canucks are all in on contending this and likely the next couple seasons. They will acquire rentals like every contending team. They will trade out assets for those rentals. Not everyone will agree this is the right path but it is the one the Canucks are on. Everyone understands the implications of trading out picks. You don’t have to like it but it does need to be accepted.
Thomas Schiano: A really good day for the Canucks and their fans gets even better!
HockeyfanMexico: Well let me be the first to say I was (thankfully) completely 100% wrong. When he went to the AHL I predicted he would be a late call up, shoot pucks into the opposing goalies chest and then get traded to a non club tending team at the deadline only to find himself playing in Europe. I posted that here a couple of seasons ago and am now enjoying some crow pie. Congratulations on the contract seems fair for both sides
Sean W: This is a rare win-win for both sides. It is nice to see! Watching how Brock Boeser does this year and what happens with his contract will be a storyline throughout the year. There are a lot of less expensive wingers with potential knocking at the door.
Alex H: I’m really happy for this hardworking kid who gives his all every game and puts in the effort during the offseason every year. Last offseason, he earned Sam Gagner’s spot by following Bruce Boudreau’s advice and improving his puck handling and board battles. This offseason, the coach had him focus on specific areas, and according to Tocchet, he was the top performer in fitness testing at camp, with J.T. Miller coming in second. I’m glad he got a well-deserved payday. But, from a business point of view, this deal seems like an interesting gamble to me. Hoglander is a middle-six winger; although he has the potential to be a top-six player, he’s more comfortable in a third-line role. He’s been a real pain to play against, scoring 24 even strength goals last season (but at shot 20%) and showing that he can play a gritty, Marchand-type game. However, there were moments when he struggled with his vision on the ice and found it hard to make an impact in heavy hockey, which affected his performance in last year’s playoffs. I’m not quite sure the reasoning behind this decision. It seems that he’s being seen as an internal replacement for Pius Suter—a player who can seamlessly move up and down the lineup. However, if that’s the case, it’s a significant jump in cap hit from $1.6m to $3m. I see this as an interesting risk because they’re banking on a breakout season, similar to the $11.6m deal. However, I believe this “gamble” has a far greater chance of paying off because he’s such a dedicated and hardworking player.
sixpax: Good for Hoglander and good for the Canucks. Finally a success story out of Abby. Heinen and Sprong should feel him breathing down their necks for a spot in the top 6
Killer Marmot: The Canucks seem to really like what they see in this year’s edition of Hoglander. They don’t want him to have a 60 point season, and then have to renegotiate his contract. That might force them to have to decide between keeping Hoglander and keeping Boeser.
sydblackwell: Nearly every move Allvin makes contrasts with the brutal Benning blunders.

Stuart Cadwallader: Great signing and well deserved for a hard working, coachable kid who has improved every year.
Rich Barry: Awesome..Rick Tocchet and Adam Foote know what it takes to win. Rick played on that big 87 Canada Cup team and they both played for the Soo Greyhounds! We’re gonna have winning seasons under these two coaches.
Glen Copeland (with perhaps my favourite response): Does management just sleep in their offices?
