The Vancouver Canucks have recalled to prospect Jonathan Lekkerimäki from AHL Abbotsford. General manager Patrik Allvin made the announcement Sunday morning.
The Canucks fell by a final score of 7-3 to the Edmonton Oilers last night, and their forward corps didn’t necessarily stand out in the loss. With Daniel Sprong gone by way of a trade to the Seattle Kraken and Brock Boeser out with a concussion, there should be ample opportunity for Lekkerimäki to play impact minutes at the NHL level right out of the gate.
Allvin said Saturday that Lekkerimäki was dealing with something minor, and had he been 100% healthy, he could have been an option for the Canucks against the Oilers last night. Lekkerimäki did not suit up for the Abbotsford Canucks’ Saturday night loss to the Bakersfield Condors.
Lekkerimäki’s first full season in North America has gotten off to a good start, as the 20-year-old right winger is already up to five goals and two assists through seven AHL games this season. The Canucks practice today, and will face the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. It’s expected that Lekkerimäki will make his NHL debut on Tuesday.
In addition to the Lekkerimäki call up, the Canucks also recalled goaltender Ty Young, while reassigning Arshdeep Bains, Nils Aman, and Arturs Silovs to AHL Abbotsford. Aman and Bains struggled during the loss to the Oilers on Saturday night, and their relegation to the minors could signal that Dakota Joshua is ready to return to game action. Joshua has been practicing with the team for the past couple of weeks and is expected to be back very soon.
Silovs entered Saturday’s game in relief duty for Kevin Lankinen after Lankinen allowed his seventh goal of the game. This move could signal that the Canucks want Silovs to get into some game action, and he could find himself starting for Abbotsford tonight to keep himself fresh. Ty Young was recalled, but he’s likely to simply serve as the Canucks’ practice goalie for today.
We’ll have a full “Scenes from Practice” dropping later this afternoon, so be sure to keep an eye out on CanucksArmy.
