Brock Boeser is looking to cash in, and whether that’s with the Vancouver Canucks or another NHL team remains to be seen.
According to a report from Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos, the Canucks’ winger is looking for an eight-year contract north of $8 million annually on his next deal. Here’s what Kypreos had to say:
Vancouver, eyeing to compete for a Stanley Cup with a core locked in of Elias Pettersson, J.T. Miller and Quinn Hughes, have a tough decision to make on Brock Boeser. He led the team with 40 goals last season, but will he continue on as part of this core?
With Jake Guentzel pushing the value of UFA scoring wingers up, Boeser is looking for eight years, north of $8 million AAV range, and Vancouver isn’t yet prepared to pay him what his projected value is. If no contract extension is on the way, the idea of losing him for nothing in free agency isn’t all that appealing either. Canucks management isn’t one to sit around and have been rather busy traders in recent seasons. Until an extension is signed, Boeser will be a trade candidate to watch this season.
Boeser, 27, is in the final year of a three-year bridge deal that pays him $6.65 million annually. After scoring 40 goals last season, it’s no surprise that he’s looking for a raise from that number. The Canucks — namely, Jim Rutherford — were fairly transparent with their desire to let Boeser “do it again” before signing him to a new contract, as Boeser has been eligible to sign a contract extension with the Canucks since July 1st.
The Canucks selected Boeser with the 23rd overall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Despite being on pace for over 30 goals over multiple injury-plagued seasons, Boeser hit the mark for the first time in his career last season, and added ten more to reach an even more impressive final tally of 40.
