Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced on Monday morning that Victor Mancini has been assigned to AHL Abbotsford.
After signing David Kampf to a one-year, $1.1 million contract on Saturday, the Canucks had to make a roster move in order to fit the centreman in. Mancini, PO Joseph and Arshdeep Bains were the three healthy scratches for yesterday’s contest against the Tampa Bay Lightning, and it’s the 23-year-old blueliner who will report to Abbotsford.
Mancini was one of the last players cut from the Canucks’ training camp roster. But two days after the final wave of cuts, the Canucks recalled Mancini after Derek Forbort and Joseph had missed three consecutive practices before the season began.
The Hancock, Michigan native saw game action in Game 3 of the season against the St. Louis Blues. Mancini appeared in five games this season, and although he was kept off the scoresheet, his impact was felt in the defensive zone. Known as a two-way defenceman, Mancini stood up for his teammates against the Washington Capitals when he dropped the gloves for the first time in his NHL career with a tough customer in Brandon Duhaime.
In his next game against the Edmonton Oilers, Mancini was injured on a defensive zone play early in the second period. He was placed on injured reserve for the following eight games (17 days) before he was activated on November 14, ahead of the Canucks’ match against the Carolina Hurricanes. Mancini did not draw into that game or yesterday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
He will now join the Abbotsford Canucks, who are struggling this season. Abbotsford has a 3-11-2 record this season, sitting in last in the Pacific Division and third-last in league standings. Mancini’s lone appearance in the AHL this season came on Abbotsford’s Calder Cup banner-raising night against the Ontario Reign. He was held off the scoresheet, finishing with a minus-2 rating in Abbotsford’s 5-2 loss.
But Abbotsford fans will be reminded of his three goals and eight points in last season’s playoff run, which helped Abbotsford capture its first Calder Cup Championship.
