On Friday afternoon, the Vancouver Canucks announced four hirings to head coach Manny Malhotra’s coaching staff.
Ryan Mougenel, Jordan Smith, and Jason Krog will be Malhotra’s assistant coaches in Vancouver, while Andrew Shaw is now the assistant to the video coach.
Here is what general manager Ryan Johnson said about the hires in his press release:
“Finalizing our coaching staff is another important step for our organization,” said Johnson. “When we started this process with Manny, we wanted to find quality people first and foremost, who are good teachers and have intelligent hockey minds. We have assembled a group that can help us build a solid foundation, connect with both our veterans and younger players, and put in place the system and style of play that Manny wants to see on the ice. We are excited to welcome Ryan, Jordan and Andrew to Vancouver, and I am very happy to see Jason get a much-deserved promotion.”
Mougenel has worked his way up throughout his hockey coaching career. He began with the Fresno Falcons of the ECHL as assistant coach and assistant general manager before being promoted to head coach and general manager of the Las Vegas Wranglers. Mougenel was then promoted to the AHL, where he served as an assistant coach for the Hershey Bears for a season before joining the Worcester Sharks.
The Scarborough, Ontario native spent the following three seasons in the Sharks organization before joining the Providence Bruins. In Providence, Mougenel served as an assistant coach for three seasons before earning a promotion to head coach, a role he has held for the last five years. Under his leadership, the Bruins held a 217-103-40 record and two Atlantic Division titles. Unfortunately, the Bruins have just one series win over Mougenel’s five years.
Smith has worked on Malhotra’s bench as an assistant coach in Abbotsford for the past two seasons. In his first year, he helped Malhotra and the Abbotsford Canucks win their first championship in franchise history by capturing the Calder Cup in 2024-25. Before his days in Abbotsford, Smith was an assistant coach for the Springfield Thunderbirds in the American League.
Like Smith, Krog and Shaw have been with the Canucks organization for the past two seasons, Krog serving as a skating and skills coach in both Vancouver and Abbotsford, and Shaw as the video coach in Abbotsford.
