The Utica Comets have sputtered in the standings to start the season, and really needed a good stretch of games to kick start them back in the right direction. Thankfully for them, they had three cracks at it today. While one of the league’s elite teams managed to eventually bring them down, the gang of Canucks prospects easily took care of their other two opponents and picked up a huge five standings points over three games.

The Games

Wednesday November 4th vs. Portland Pirates (3-2 Win)
Release from UticaComets.com
The Pirates kicked off the scoring 8:19 into the first period when the puck got deflected into the air, Cannata lost sight of it, and the puck deflected off the back glass, off Cannata’s back and trickled into the net. Vinny Saponari was credited with the Portland goal. Zac Larraza and Chase Balisy assisted on the goal.
Archibald then scored a goal on his first shot back in a Comet uniform. The goal came 18:04 into the first period, when he received a pass from Alex Friesen and put a wrist shot over the shoulder of the goalkeeper to tie the game 1-1. Andrey Pedan also assisted on the Archibald goal.
The Comets struck again just 56 seconds later when Sautner fired a shot to the left of the goalkeeper on a perfect pass from Hunter Shinkaruk, for the first goal of his professional career. Blair Jones was also credited with an assist on the goal.
Portland came back to tie the game 6:53 into the second period on a goal from Rob Schremp. Assisting on Schremp’s goal were Cameron Gaunce and Rob Flick.
The Comets regained the lead when Blair Jones scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 18:39 into the second period. His shot deflected off the skate of a Portland defender and straight into the net for Jones’ fourth goal of the season. Carter Bancks assisted on the goal.
The third period was a defensive battle, as the two teams went back and forth. The Pirates had a chance late after Archibald and Alexandre Grenier were called for penalties, putting the Comets down two men. Utica managed to stop the Portland 6-on-3 attack to secure the victory.
Friday November 6th vs. Toronto Marlies (5-4 Shootout Loss)
Release from UticaComets.com
The Comets and Marlies exchanged blows throughout the first period with the Comets striking first when Hamilton broke into the Marlies’ zone and put a wrist shot over the shoulder of the goalkeeper, for his first goal of the season. Taylor Fedun and Bancks assisted on the goal.
Toronto tied the game 1-1 just 42 seconds later on a Casey Bailey goal. Assisting on the goal were T.J. Brennan and Frederik Gauthier.
Utica came right back 1:11 later when Gaunce broke free on a breakaway and scored his second goal of the season. With only the goalkeeper to beat, Gaunce flicked a shot into the left corner of the net to give the Comets a 2-1 lead. Grenier and Alex Friesen were credited with the assists on the Gaunce goal.
The Marlies tied the score 2-2 when Kasperi Kapanen put a shot past Markstrom, from in front of the net. The goal came on a pass from William Nylander. Mark Arcobello also assisted on the play.
Toronto got their first lead of the game early in the second period when T.J. Brennan bounced a shot off Markstrom’s pad and into the net just 1:09 into the period.
The Comets came out firing in the third period and tied the game 3-3 just 1:02 into the period. Zalewski got past the defense on a breakaway and flicked a shot over the shoulder of the goalkeeper, for his first goal of the season. The goal was unassisted. The goal was his first goal at The AUD since his high school days, playing for the New Hartford Spartans.
The Comets regained the lead when Travis Ehrhardt took the puck behind the net, went back around the net and sent a shot past the goalkeeper for his second goal the season. Bancks and Grenier assisted on the goal.
With 9:20 left in the third, the Marlies had an answer once again, when William Nylander sent a shot by Markstrom to tie the game 4-4 and send it to overtime. Josh Leivo and Justin Holl set up the Toronto goal.
After a scoreless overtime period, the game went to a shootout Mark Arcobello went first for Toronto and scored the difference-maker for the Marlies.
Saturday November 7th vs. Providence Bruins (5-1 Win)
Release from UticaComets.com
The Bruins jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead 1:49 into the first period when Colton Hargrove slipped a wrist shot past Jacob Markstrom from the slot. Assisting on the goal were Ben Youds and Rob Bordson.
The Comets tied the score 1-1 at the 11:30 mark of the first period when Shinkaruk scored his first of the game on the power play to tie the score at 1. Shinkaruk was perfectly set up when Gaunce put a pass right in front of the net for Shinkaruk to finish off. Linden Vey was also credited with an assist on the goal.
Shinkaruk scored again just 2:42 later when he fired a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, to give the Comets a 2-1 lead.
At the 15:37 mark of the first period, Gaunce forced a turnover before he skillfully weaved through a couple of Bruins defenders and wristed a shot past the goalkeeper to put the Comets ahead 3-1.
It was looking like it would be a scoreless second period until the Comets struck again 17:53 into the second. Gaunce circled around the back of the net, sent a pass in front of the net, and Zalewski finished it off for his second goal of the season to give the Comets a 4-1 lead.
Shinkaruk finished off the hat trick when a shot deflected off the goalkeeper to Alexandre Grenier, who then sent a pass across across the crease to Shinkaruk in front of the net, who finished it off for his third goal of the game and ninth of the season. Vey picked up his second assist of the night on the goal.
The Comets finished with 23 shots on goal, while Providence finished with 21 shots. The Comets power play converted on two of its three opportunities, and the penalty-killing unit killed off their lone penalty late in the third.

The Comets took another slight possession dip, but so did many of the other juggernauts who are starting to even out. Their 52.01% estimated Fenwick Close, according to CHL stats, is good for 11th in the league. While the Comets aren’t particularly shooting much, these strong numbers are helped by Utica’s 25.91 shots against per game, tied for the 4th fewest in the league. Low event hockey seems to be working for the team.
This was an interesting weekend between the pipes. Joe Cannata stopped 25 of 27 on Wednesday, but the weekend was devoted to Jacob Markstrom’s conditioning stint. His game against the Marlies wasn’t overly impressive, but he stopped 20 of 21 against the Bruins on Saturday.

Player of The Week

People will be quick to point to Hunter Shinkaruk’s hat trick, and that was a fantastic performance, but I’m giving the nod to Brendan Gaunce. He came back to the Comets lineup after a call up to the Canucks, and put up points in both games. His pair of goals and assists tie him with Shinkaruk for the post points on the week, and he only took fewer shots than Taylor Fedun and Alex Grenier. His +3 trailed only Andrey Pedan, and he took no penalties. A very solid weekend overall.

Looking Ahead

The Comets have just a pair of games this weekend as they hit the road. They take on the Springfield Falcons on Friday night, and the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday. Both teams are about as middle of the pack as one could get, and the Crunch are in Utica’s division, so these are important games to gauge the team’s odds down the stretch. Both puck drops are at 7PM EST, or 4PM in Vancouver.
