Week one of the Vancouver Canucks training camp was nothing short of amazing.
The fact that the Canucks were back on the ice and playing hockey was just tremendous. We got to see so many clips and tweets about hockey and that is something that I missed dearly.
For the second time this year, CanucksArmy was in attendance for training camp. Our managing editor David Quadrelli and I were able to be in the building for practices and scrimmages while also being on zoom calls with players.
There were finally some relevant storylines to talk about instead of trade rumours being swirled around by Vancouver radio hosts. Let’s start with one storyline that seemed to grow as the week went on, even though he was involved in different conversations just before training camp began.

Brock Rocks

On the Friday before training camp 2.0, it was reported by Matt Sekeres of TSN1040 that the Canucks were exploring the possibility of trading Brock Boeser.
This story was shutdown at day one of camp when Jim Benning made it clear that he did not appreciate the rumour that Sekeres was sending out on Vancouver’s top sports talk radio station who also happens to not hold the rights to Canucks games.
Brock Boeser seemed to come into camp inspired by all the outside noise.
He and his teammates even joked about the situation.
He has looked to be one of the most impressive players in Canucks training camp. This should come as no surprise as he is an all-star calibre player who has the potential to be a 30 goal scorer every season. His body was able to rest over the break and I would project him being one of the most dangerous players when he returns to the ice and gets to compete against his hometown Minnesota Wild team during the play-in games.
The second scoring line that features Bo Horvat and Tanner Pearson may have looked like the landing spot for Tyler Toffoli but it seems like Boeser will have the chance to gain back the chemistry that he and Horvat had back in 2017-18.
When healthy and motivated, Boeser is one of the best players on this roster and can bring another level of offence to a Canucks team that will need him to be a game-changer if they want to go far in this year’s playoffs.
Another good week of training camp could really catapult Boeser into having a big series against the Wild, from there–who knows that will happen to the Minnesota born sniper.

Jake slips, Zack flips

Some fans love Jake Virtanen and most fans love Zack MacEwen.
Going into week two it seems like MacEwen has earned a spot on the third line alongside Antoine Roussel and Adam Gaudette. We will see how the second week of training camp goes but MacEwen has really worked his way into a starting spot while Jake has fallen back a bit and been yelled at by captain Horvat.
The third line right wing spot will be fought for as the week goes on and though MacEwen seems to have found himself in that spot, it’s going to be hard to take Virtanen out of the lineup with what he brings offensively.
This will be one of the major talking points and this week goes on and keep an eye out for the line combinations as the week progresses.

EvFERything is Trending Up

The forgotten forward Micheal Ferland has been able to stay healthy through training camp after missing the first couple days of camp. The winger hadn’t played in a hockey game since February 14th when he didn’t make it out of the first period in a rehab start with the Utica Comets.
This past Sunday, he played in a full two-period scrimmage where he was skating along with two black ace forwards and was able to keep up with the pace of play. He was physical, and he was doing basically everything he normally would in a game.
It would be a huge addition to the Canucks if Ferland is able to contribute in the playoffs. Just the thought of him being a 13th forward who comes in to bring some physicality and energy excites the heck out of me.
He may not be back to 100% but this week has been another massive step towards seeing Ferland be effective in a Cnaucks jersey.
Week two of training camp gets going on Tuesday morning with rumours of more scrimmages on the horizon before the team leaves for Edmonton on Sunday.
