We are now just five days away from the official start of the NHL season. But maybe more importantly for the Vancouver Canucks, we’re just four days away from teams across the NHL having to make their final wave of roster cuts.

As we’ve covered, the Canucks have first waiver priority – and will hold that position until November 1 – to scoop up any players that interest them on the waiver wire after finishing last in the NHL standings last season.

Here is who the Canucks passed over on yesterday’s waiver wire:

All three of the players the Canucks placed on waivers yesterday cleared. The Canucks also placed Stienburg on waivers today. Check back tomorrow to see if he clears!

Like yesterday, this list includes several former Canucks who saw themselves waived today: Sawchenko, Burroughs, and Pederson. It’s highly unlikely the Canucks will claim one of these former players.

Yesterday didn’t see too many intriguing options hit the waiver wire for the Canucks to claim. Today, however, there are a few names that could be of interest for a rebuilding Canucks squad. Here are all the 25-or-under players to hit the wire today: Neuchev (22), Seeley (24), Seminoff (22), Chromiak (24), Pinelli (23), Bankier (23), Lambos (23), Schmidt (23), Merilainen (24), Brisson (24), Rybinski (25), and Tverberg (24).

A few names stand out who have decent American League scoring profiles.

The two most interesting are Matthew Seminoff and Martin Chromiak.

Seminoff, a 6′ winger and a 2022 sixth-round pick, scored 24 goals and 50 points in 72 games with the Texas Stars last season. Chromiak, a 6′ winger and 2020 fifth-round pick, has had a few years of solid AHL production. Over four seasons with the Ontario Reign, Chromiak has scored 76 goals and 155 points in 265 games, including a career-high 28-goal, 56-point campaign just last season.

A pair of Maple Leafs could also be of interest.

A familiar name in the hockey world, Brendan Brisson, son of popular player agent Pat, is coming off one of his best AHL seasons, scoring 19 goals and 37 points. The 6′ winger and 2020 first-round pick (29th overall) has also seen NHL action, playing 27 games across the last three seasons. Rybinski, a 6’2″ winger from Vancouver, has produced 30 points in back-to-back AHL seasons.

On the backend, Carson Lambos should be a familiar name. The 2021 Minnesota Wild first-round pick (26th overall) hits today’s waiver wire. His high-end junior play hasn’t fully translated to the professional level, as he hasn’t reached the 20-point mark in any of his three AHL seasons. Still, he got his first taste of NHL action last season on a strong Minnesota Wild squad.

However, the best of the bunch is Ottawa Senators goaltender Leevi Merilainen.

Merilainen, 24, has played NHL games in three of the last four seasons. While he struggled in his 20 games last season with a 3.51 goals-against average and an .860 save percentage, he’s just two years removed from a 12-game stint in which he had a 1.99 goals against average, a .925 save percentage, and an 8-3-1 record, with three shutouts.

With Thatcher Demko’s health in question to start of the season, and if the organization is willing to risk waiving and potentially losing Nikita Tolopilo, a claim on Merilainen could be solid insurance if things in the crease go sideways.

While there wasn’t a big fish on yesterday’s waiver wire, today’s edition offers options at all three positions. For our money, Merilainen, Lambos, Chromiak, and Seminoff are today’s best options.
