The Vancouver Canucks have bolstered up their list of core staff today, hiring Scott Walker as a player development consultant.
This is the very same Scott Walker that was drafted in the fifth round of the 1993 Entry Draft by the Canucks, and spent four seasons playing for the team. In that time, he picked up 44 points, but was known more as a grinder who would drop the mitts at a moments notice. Walker departed the organization when the Nashville Predators, the team where he spent the bulk of his career claimed him in the 1998 expansion draft.
Walker’s Canuck claim to fame? He was the first player in history to score an NHL goal outside of North America, scoring on the Anaheim (Mighty) Ducks in the 1997/98 season opener in Tokyo, Japan. His non-Canucks claim to fame is sucker-punching Aaron Ward, which isn’t as cool.
Walker is a part-owner of the OHL’s Guelph Storm, and was the head coach fo the team from December 2010 to January 2015. Under his watch, the Storm won the 2014 OHL Championship and headed to the Memorial Cup, where they lost in the finals. He was also the assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2015 World Junior Hockey Championships.
Walker will be working directly with Canucks prospects, and will presumably report to Director of Player Development Stan Smyl.
