The Vancouver Canucks (3-10-1) look for back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they visit the San Jose Sharks (6-6-1) at SAP Center. The puck drops at 7pm PT. The Canucks come off a 6-5 overtime win in Anaheim, snapping a 10-game winless skid. It was the team’s first victory since October 3rd against Calgary.

What we saw

It appears Manny Malhotra will stick with the same line-up that produced a victory in its last game. That means Brendan Gallagher, Luke Schenn and Guillaume Brisebois will once again sit out. It looks like Leevi Meriläinen will make his third straight start in goal.
Filip Hronek’s first goal of the season was the winner on Tuesday. It came on a 5-on-3 power play in the final minute of overtime. Jonathan Lekkerimäki scored twice and now leads the Canucks with six goals on the season. Lekkerimäki played a career-high 19:55 in that game. Brock Boeser scored a third period goal and has scored in back to back games. And Elias Pettersson had a pair of assists against the Ducks and now carries a five-game point streak into action tonight. He has picked up two goals and four assists over that span. Pettersson logged a season-high 24:57 on Tuesday including 4:04 of overtime.
The Canucks established a season-high with 33 shots on goal in Anaheim and also set a season low holding the Ducks to 23 shots. It was just the second time this season the team has outshot an opponent. The Canucks are 2-0 in those games.
Two of the Canucks three victories this season have come when their opponent has scored five goals. It also happened in a 6-5 overtime win in Edmonton on opening night.
The Opponent
The Sharks return to action following a 2-0 home loss to Buffalo on Tuesday. It was the club’s second shutout loss of the season. San Jose was outshot 40-23. Yaroslav Askarov stopped 38 of the 39 shots he faced on the night. Askarov will get the start in goal again tonight.
Macklin Celebrini leads the Sharks with five goals and 15 points. He has three goals and 13 points in seven career games against his hometown team. Meanwhile, the second overall pick in June’s draft, Ivar Stenberg, has three goals and nine points, tying him for second in NHL rookie scoring. Those two are set to skate on the same line tonight.
Former Canuck Kiefer Sherwood has two goals, six points and a league-leading 73 hits. Sherwood already has 42 more hits than his nearest teammate.
Filip Bystedt, the Sharks’ 2022 first-round draft pick, is expected to make his NHL debut tonight at centre between Sherwood and another former Canuck, Tyler Toffoli.
While the Sharks have six wins on the season, only one of them has come in regulation time. San Jose, Columbus and Vancouver are the three teams in the league with just one win in regulation to this point of the new season.

News and notes

The Canucks AHL farm team posted a 5-2 win over the Barracudas in San Jose last night. Abbotsford has won six straight games. Tonight, the NHL parent teams go head-to-head.
The Sharks took three of the four meetings between these teams last season and picked up at least a point in all four games (3-0-1). The teams will face off four times again this season, with a pair of games coming a week apart in mid-December.
The referees for tonight’s game are Cody Beach and Jake Brenk.
