The losses are piling up for the Vancouver Canucks to begin the 2026-27 season, and it’s starting to get to the players in the locker room.
With last night’s 6-3 loss to the defending Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes, the Canucks find themselves in the midst of an eight-game losing streak. It began at home on October 4 against the Vegas Golden Knights before they hit the road for a six-game Eastern road trip. They lost all six games on that road trip, and were hoping to turn the page once they returned home. But that didn’t happen tonight.
Following the eighth straight defeat, Elias Pettersson met with the media and expressed visible frustration with the lack of results over their last eight games.
“It was a good result coming into the third, but … it just sucks,” Pettersson said with a lengthy pause. “Same story again; don’t come out on top.”
Throughout the availability, Pettersson was often seen shaking his head and found himself at a loss for words. He simply ran out of answers, sharing that it was hard to find positives in yet another loss. And despite finding the scoresheet on a pretty impressive play while falling over, Pettersson was more down on himself about his throwing the stick penalty that awarded Sebastian Aho a penalty shot in the second period:
“That was probably one of the dumbest things I’ve done on the ice,” Pettersson said about his penalty. “Thanks to Leevi for saving that penalty shot.”
While understanding that losses are going to come throughout this new rebuilding direction the team finds themselves in, thinking about the big picture down the line doesn’t make these losses any easier for the guys in the room.
“I don’t know. It’s hard to think,” Pettersson paused. “I don’t know. I don’t have the right answer for that now. It’s just, just trying to scramble to get a win. And … it sucks losing. I don’t have any good words for it.”
Throughout the seven losses before tonight, the vibes around the team did not appear to be as gloom as tonight’s loss was. But it’s more than just this season. The loses have followed the club throughout nearly all of last year, and nine losses in their first 11 games of this season is only adding to what has been a tough 12 months for the players in the room.
Max Sasson also met with the media postgame and was asked how old all the losing is starting to become:
“Extremely,” Sasson began. “We’re all professionals. We all want to win. You know, it’s … getting really old. I think for our group and our mental space, we need to start getting some wins. But that starts with playing the right way. You get yourselves into some tight games and we have to figure out how to come out on the right side.”
The Canucks will look to snap their losing skid on Thursday, when they welcome the Detroit Red Wings to Rogers Arena.
