This summer, the Vancouver Canucks invited Latvian Rodrigo Abols to their prospect camp. The fans and media fell in love with the 19-year-old, though nobody quite realized that the CBA’s rules meant that the Canucks legally couldn’t sign him to any sort of contract. Still, it was a great way to get a look at a player eligible to be drafted in 2016. Though, in hindsight, they could have also headed onto YouTube this morning and watched this play and ended up just as impressed:
There’s an absurd level of foot coordination that goes into making a play like that; I can’t even do that while playing actual soccer, but Abols not only makes contact but sets up a perfect through… puck to send New York Rangers prospect Keegan Iverson off on a breakaway.
Abols, playing in his first North American season, has 25 points in 32 games with the Winterhawks, ranking him sixth on the team in scoring. He also had 4 goals in 5 games at the World Junior Division 1 Championships, leading the Latvians in goals and tying for the point lead.
Abols, who is a 6’5 centre with a left-handed shot, is eligible for the 2016 NHL Draft. It’s certainly possible that a team, possibly the Canucks, takes a chance on him, though given his age and productivity, it would likely be in a lower round. Unless, you know, the Whitecaps go after him first.
