The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired defenceman Luke Schenn from the Vancouver Canucks.

Daily Faceoff NHL Insider Frank Seravalli was the first to break the trade, with Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reporting that the Leafs will be sending a third round pick in this year’s draft to Vancouver.

Schenn has been the subject of trade speculation for months now, with the Canucks recently choosing to sit him out for trade-related reasons. Schenn’s wife is due to give birth this week, so Schenn has spent his time away from the team by getting his family prepared for their move, which we now know is back to Toronto.

The Maple Leafs originally drafted Schenn in the first round at fifth overall of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Schenn’s NHL career has seen its ups and downs, but Schenn’s perseverance through it all has been truly outstanding to witness, with the right-shot defenceman putting together a career season at 33 years of age.

After the Canucks traded for him ahead of the 2019 trade deadline, Schenn signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he rebuilt his reputation around the league and won back-to-back Stanley Cups with Tampa. Schenn signed with the Canucks in the summer of 2021, and has provided tremendous value for them over the past two seasons.

Schenn became the all-time leader in hits by a defenceman earlier this year, and has tallied three goals and 18 assists with the Canucks through 55 games with the Canucks this season.
