Report: Canucks and Brock Boeser’s camp to re-engage in contract extension talks this week

Now that they’ve got Bruce Boudreau taken care of, the Vancouver Canucks are turning their focus to their next order of business.
Signing restricted free agent forward Brock Boeser.
The Canucks will fire up talks with Boeser’s camp this coming week, according to a Friday report from Thomas Drance and Rick Dhaliwal of The Athletic.
The Athletic understands that the Canucks and Boeser’s camp plan to re-engage on contract extension talks next week. The process is uncommonly complicated, purely as a result of Boeser’s backloaded contract structure, which entitles him to a $7.5 million qualifying offer (which is equivalent to a one-year, $7.5 million contract offer) by July 11 if the club is to retain their rights to the consistent 25-goal scorer as a restricted free agent.

According to Drance and Dhaliwal, the Canucks are unlikely to use that tactic at this time, and are likely to qualify him if an extension can’t be agreed upon beforehand.
Drance and Dhaliwal added that they get the sense the Canucks would like to sign Boeser to a three-year deal at a reduced cap hit, even if it means that Boeser will be a UFA at the time of the deal’s expiration.
Boeser, 25, is coming off a bit of a disappointing season, but as he made clear at his end of season media availability, the forward was dealing with the emotional burden of his father Duke’s declining health all season long, which weighed quite heavily on him throughout the year.
