As the March 3rd trade deadline approaches, the rumour mill is beginning to heat up when it comes to the Vancouver Canucks.
On Friday morning, Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie and Dhali — The Team rounded up all the latest when it comes to the Canucks’ trade assets. Here’s what Dhaliwal had to say about Brock Boeser and Luke Schenn.
“Six to seven teams still kicking the tires on Boeser,” said Dhaliwal. “They’re trying to figure out how teams can take on that contract. Obviously they’ve talked to his hometown team, the Wild, but Minnesota, they don’t know if they’re buyers or sellers right now. They’re going through the Matt Dumba situation, there’s cap issues next year for them, Minnesota’s going to be tough to do… Will the Canucks have to take money back on Boeser? Most likely if it does happen.
“Luke Schenn. Lots of interest there, but he’s a Rick Tocchet type of player. Schenn plays the game the exact way Rick Tocchet did. I wonder — and this is me wondering, this is me — I wonder what Tocchet would think of losing a guy like him. If I’m Rick Tocchet and I’m looking at this roster — he’s got a pretty good idea in his head who he’d like to keep and let go as well.”
Boeser was re-signed this past offseason by the Canucks to a three-year contract with an annual average value of $6.65 million. So far this season, Boeser has nine goals and 19 assists through 40 games.
Schenn, on the other hand, has proved yet again that he’s capable of playing top four minutes when called upon, as he’s been Quinn Hughes’ most consistent partner once again this season. Schenn’s reputation around the league is very strong, and he will become an unrestricted free agent this summer after his two-year $850,000 AAV deal with the Canucks expires.
