The Canucks were looking to bounce back from being shut out in New Jersey yesterday against a cold Ranger team who were losers of three straight entering this afternoon’s tilt. It turned out to be a tale of two Canuck teams as we saw them dominate play for two periods only to completely turtle in the final frame.
Through 40, the visitors played determined hockey, controlling possession and shot share while flexing their muscles on special teams, but opted to sit back in the third. Without stellar goaltending and a little bit of luck from the refs on a late missed call, the Canucks may not have come away with the two points.
Lines
Jacob Markstrom returned from his 3 game absence to oppose King Henrik. Jake Virtanen got a shot in the top six as Green searched for some offense following yesterday’s disappointment. Adam Gaudette and Ashton Sautner took warmups but eventually joined Eriksson in the press box for this one.

Game Notes
  • Horvat scored in consecutive games notching his 100th career goal in his 384th game. The goal came on the struggling Canucks powerplay to give them the 1-0 lead.
  • The Canucks came out shooting everything, finishing the opening frame with 20 shots, a season-high and finished with 43 shots. Only 25 shots were registered yesterday in New Jersey. They certainly didn’t look like a team playing the 2nd of a back to back to start.
  • Green switched up the defence pairings briefly to feature Edler with Tanev and Hughes with Myers, but eventually went back.
  • The Rangers came out from the 2nd intermission looking like a different team. The Canucks appeared to work on defending the lead in the 3rd rather than continue to drive play and it didn’t work out as they had hoped. The Cancuks stopped skating and looked to be outmanned for what turned out to be their worst period of hockey yet this season.
  • The PK didn’t allow a goal on three Ranger powerplays, once again doing its job, while the PP went 1/3 as Quinn Hughes ran the point.
Top Performers
  • Jacob Markstrom had a statement game in his first start since October 12th. He finished with 40 saves on 42 shots and completely bailed the Canucks out in the third.
  • Horvat is continuing to find his game and looked his best today. In addition to his PP goal, he finished with 7 shots and went 8-4 on draws.
  • Pettersson finished with another multi-point game, recording the primary assists on the first two goals. He drove the first line, who once again controlled a great share of possession.
  • The first shorthanded goal of the season came off the stick of Jay Beagle. The Canucks are now 2nd in shorthanded goal differential, only behind the Golden Knights who have scored 4 shorthanded goals to their 2 allowed. (Insane right?)
