Ahead of practice on Monday, Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin met with the media at Rogers Arena to field questions on a number of topics.
One of those topics was Brock Boeser, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season. Prior to the season, Allvin said the Canucks would need to make a decision on Boeser by the NHL Trade Deadline, insinuating that if they weren’t going to be able to sign the winger, they would look to trade him.
With the March 7th Trade Deadline fast approaching, here’s what Allvin said when asked about Boeser.
“Yeah, I wouldn’t say there’s urgency. I think [we’re] still evaluating him. I have a great relationship with his agent, and when the time is right, we [will] make the decision… we know Brock and the conversation and [are] evaluating, and again, [there are] two sides of it too, you know? It’s got to work for both sides long term, and anything can happen here any day.”
Boeser got off to a solid start to his contract year, with six goals and five assists in his first 11 games. In game 12, however, Boeser was the victim of a blindside cheapshot from LA Kings forward Tanner Jeannot that held him out of the Canucks’ lineup for two weeks. In the 25 games Boeser’s played in since returning from that injury, he’s tallied nine goals and eight assists.
As we approach the 4-Nations Face-Off break, Boeser is still on pace to hit 30 goals despite his goalscoring pace slowing down from what it was at the start of the season.
Boeser enjoyed a career year last season, as he not only broke the 30 goal mark for the first time — a long-standing goal of his — but he also went ahead and hit 40 on the year. Boeser finished 2023-24 with 40 goals and 33 assists and added seven goals and five assists through 12 playoff games.
