Now that the Young Stars Classic is officially in the books, all eyes are on training camp. The Vancouver Canucks’ training camp kicks off this week (Thursday) in Penticton, BC. However, there are still questions left unanswered in the crease.
Will Thatcher Demko be ready for training camp? If not, will he be ready for opening night of the season? What’s Arturs Silovs’ condition? Will the club make a move to bring in another veteran goaltender? And if so, how will they do it with under $200k in available cap space?
The Athletic’s Thomas Drance sat down with Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin at the conclusion of the Young Stars Classic to discuss the future of the tournament, Brock Boeser’s expectations and his future with the organization, and also an interesting tidbit about Thatcher Demko and their upcoming plans with long-term injured reserve (LTIR).
The Athletic:
You’ve clearly gone to great length, and that process is going to continue throughout the season, to operate outside of long-term injured reserve (LTIR). How do you view the importance of that and how much of how you’ve handled it to this point was shaped by the money-in, money-out crunch you bumped into at the trade deadline last year?
Allvin:
“Yeah, obviously it’s a challenge once you’re in LTIR. And we believe that we have different scenarios to not have to utilize LTI money prior to roster setting.”
“I wouldn’t say that it would be easier, but it would give us more options as we go along. I would prefer to be totally out of it, but that’s not going to be the case here.”
“We have some internal discussions about options to make it work the best and hopefully accrue some cap space (throughout the year).”

As it currently stands, the Canucks have $190,833 of available cap space, and with Demko and Silovs potentially on the shelf to start the season, the club has four available goalies under contract/professional tryout: Jiri Patera, Dylan Ferguson, Nikita Tolopilo and Ty Young.
Vancouver has long shown interest in free agent goaltender Kevin Lankinen, so much so that an offer has been extended. Despite a rejected offer, Chek TV’s Rick Dhaliwal reported that the Canucks’ pursuit has not stopped on Lankinen.
