Welcome back to NHL Notebook — the series here at CanucksArmy where we deliver you news and notes from around the National Hockey League — oftentimes through a Vancouver Canucks-tinted lens!
You won’t have to wait long for more best-on-best international hockey.
On Monday morning, the NHL and NHLPA announced that Calgary, Edmonton, and Prague will host the 2028 World Cup of Hockey in February 2028.
“There is no international competition in sports that matches the passion, skill, and excitement of hockey’s best-on-best coming together to represent their countries — last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off and the recent Winter Olympics were just the latest examples,” Gary Bettman said in a statement. “We at the National Hockey League and our partners at the National Hockey League Players’ Association can’t wait to bring the World Cup of Hockey 2028 to three spectacular venues in three cities that shine when staging big events. We know Calgary, Edmonton and Prague will serve as fantastic hosts for hockey fans from all over the globe, and that the greatest hockey players in the world will compete on a level that will make this event truly memorable.”
Calgary’s Scotia Place — the new state-of-the-art facility that will serve as the NHL Flames and AHL Wranglers’ home arena beginning in 2027-28 — will host the Calgary games, while Rogers Place and O2 Arena will host the Edmonton and Prague games, respectively.
Per the release, here’s how things will be split up:
  • Calgary will host seven games – six group stage games and one elimination game
  • Prague will host seven games – six group stage games and one elimination game
  • Edmonton will host three games – two semi-final games and the championship final game
Participating nations for the World Cup of Hockey’s 2028 return have yet to be announced, but it’s a safe bet to assume it’ll be the four 4 Nations Face-Off nations (Canada, the United States, Sweden and Finland) along with four more national teams. It’s also reasonable to assume that Czechia will be among the nations included, given that Prague is one of the host cities.
