Welcome back to NHL Notebook — the series here at CanucksArmy where we deliver you news and notes from around the National Hockey League — oftentimes through a Vancouver Canucks-tinted lens!
At some point, you’ve got to feel a bit bad for the Seattle Kraken.
Not long ago, they threw big money at Artemi Panarin, reportedly four years at $14 million annually. Panarin said thanks but no thanks, and elected to agree to be traded to the LA Kings instead, where he signed a two-year deal worth $11 million. That means Panarin left over $30 million on the table, all because he didn’t want to play in Seattle.
And yesterday, Jason Robertson pulled a similar move.

Jason Robertson turns down offers from Kraken and Blues

On Thursday night, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Dallas Stars forward and pending restricted free agent Jason Robertson turned down an eight-year contract extension offer from the Seattle Kraken. Here is what Friedman wrote:
“According to multiple sources, the Seattle Kraken were given permission by Dallas to talk to Jason Robertson, and offered him approximately $15 million per year on a eight-year deal — but the offer was declined… It’s believed the two teams had worked out some kind of trade before the permission was granted, apparently including Seattle’s first-round pick — seventh overall in Friday’s draft.”
Hours after Friedman’s report, Daily Faceoff’s Jeff Marek reported that “the St Louis Blues offered a package that included multiple first round picks to the Dallas Stars for Jason Robertson but he is not interested in signing there.”
There were no concrete details of what St. Louis’ contract offer to Robertson was, but one can assume it was also for some pretty big money. But Seattle offering $15 million? $120 million of guaranteed money in a sign and trade? Eight year contracts are about to become obsolete in the NHL. That’s a big commitment from Seattle.
As I said at the top, you kind of have to feel a bit bad for the Kraken. Seattle is taking big swings. Unfortunately, those big swings are so far resembling most of Cal Raleigh’s big swings this year.
Much like that joke/analogy, it’s been a lot of swings and misses.
The NHL Draft is just hours away and there’s been no shortage of trades already this week. With Robertson, Connor Hellebuyck, Dylan Larkin, and Zach Werenski’s names all firmly out there in trade rumours, could we see more before the first round commences at 4 PM Pacific? We’ll soon find out!
