Brady Tkachuk and Mackie Samoskevich were the first dominoes to fall, and the NHL trade market hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down in the days since.
On Tuesday, the Calgary Flames acquired Simon Nemec from the New Jersey Devils, sending a pair of first-round picks back to New Jersey. Shortly after, the Ottawa Senators acquired William Eklund from the San Jose Sharks, sending the 9th overall pick in this Friday’s draft back in return.
Less than an hour after the Senators-Sharks swap, news broke via Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman that the St. Louis Blues would be trading Jordan Kyrou to the Washington Capitals. According to Friedman, the return going back to St. Louis is the 16th overall pick, Connor McMichael, and 19-year-old centre Milton Gastrin.
Kyrou, 28, has five years remaining on his contract at $8.125 million annually. Kyrou has been a prolific goalscorer throughout his career. In three of his six NHL seasons, Kyrou has notched 30 goals. In 2024-25, Kyrou scored 36 goals, one shy of his career-high of 37 in 2022-23. Kyrou comes with a highly-touted two-way game as well, as he picked up votes for the Selke Trophy — awarded to the league’s top defensive forward — in each of the last two seasons. The Blues originally selected Kyrou in the second round with the 35th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.
Going back to St. Louis is Connor McMichael, a 25-year-old centre who put up career-highs in goals with 26 and assists with 31 in 2024-25. This past season, McMichael tallied 14 goals and 32 assists through 78 games. McMichael is a restricted free agent and will need a new contract this offseason.
Kyrou was one of the main names out there in trade rumours, and the NHL trade market just got a bit thinner as a result of today’s moves.
Your turn, Canucks!
