The Vancouver Canucks have found themselves on a bit of a win streak as they collect their fourth straight win against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night. They fell 2-0 early in the second period, and with three goals in just over a minute, followed by Arshdeep Bains’ first goal in the NHL, they found themselves up 4-2 and held onto the lead for the rest of the game.

Matchup
This should be an interesting matchup as both teams will be without their number one goalie, as Frederik Andersen is out with an injury while Thatcher Demko is still recovering from his knee injury. The Hurricanes turn to Pyotr Kochetkov (2-1 record, 2.7 goals against average and a .896 save percentage) while the Canucks are rocking with their savour, Kevin Lankinen (4-0-1 record, 1.95 goals against average and a .930 save percentage, with one shutout).
The last time these two teams met, the Canucks were welcoming Elias Lindholm to their lineup. He didn’t disappoint, as he scored two power play goals and led the Canucks to a 3-2 victory in the Lenovo centre. Brock Boeser and Quinn Hughes also added two assists respectively. On the Hurricanes side, they also found success on special teams, as they scored a shorthanded and power play goal. However, it was not enough as Demko walked away with the victory over Kochetkov.
The Canucks are 12th in goals for (3.4), tied for 27th in goals against (2.9), 15th in shots on goal per game (29.4), and 23rd in shots on goal allowed per game (28). The Hurricanes are 15th in goals for (3.3), 29th in goals against (2.3), 2nd in shots on goal per game (35), and tied for 32nd in shots on goal allowed per game (25.7).
Vancouver has won three straight head-to-head matches against Carolina, with all three matchups ending in a one-goal game.
Handicapping the Canucks (4-3 SU, 2-5 ATS, 3-4 O/U)
When you’re on a streak like the Canucks find themselves, why mess with a winning lineup? The Canucks are rocking with the same forward lines of:
Nils Höglander – Elias Pettersson – Conor Garland
Jake DeBrusk – JT Miller – Brock Boeser
Danton Heinen – Teddy Blueger – Kiefer Sherwood
Arshdeep Bains – Pius Suter – Daniel Sprong
As mentioned above, the Surrey native Arshdeep Bains recorded his first NHL goal off the back of a great rush from Daniel Sprong. This Hurricanes team is coached very well defensively, so getting key production out of the bottom six will be crucial. If that duo can continue to produce, the Canucks stand a good chance, especially against the opposing backup goalie.
Defenceman Erik Brännström has been a breath of fresh air on the backend, holding his own defensively while providing solid puck-moving ability on the bottom pairing. It remains to be seen whether he will remain in the lineup with Derek Forbort set to return to the team after the passing of his father. The coaching staff had hinted they’re comfortable throwing him on the right side. Nonetheless, he’s earned his spot in the lineup for now.
Handicapping the Hurricanes (5-2 SU, 5-2 ATS, 1-6 O/U)
Unlike the Canucks, the Hurricanes are making some lineup changes. Here’s how they’re rocking their forwards tonight:
Andrei Svechnikov – Sebastian Aho – Jack Roslovic
Eric Robinson – Jesperi Kotkaniemi – Martin Necas
Jordan Martinook – Jordan Staal – Seth Jarvis
Will Carrier – Jack Drury – Jackson Blake
Taking Jarvis off the top line gives the Hurricanes a very deep lineup, with pairs on the three top lines, much like the Canucks had last year and a reason they were so successful.
Like the Canucks, the Hurricanes find themselves on a streak of their own, as they’ve won three straight and hold a 4-1 road record on the season. Given their high shot volume, they’re going to be a lot for this Canucks team to contain. If they can continue to find success with shot volume, they might be able to get to Lankinen, and we see his first bad game in a Canucks uniform.
My best bets
Brock Boeser point (-145)
Boeser has a point in five straight games and seven points in seven games this season. The Hurricanes are great defensively, allowing just 2.5 goals against, but Pyotr Kochetkov is in net, who has a 2.7 goals against average and a sub .900 save percentage. Against Carolina, Boesr has points in three straight, totalling four points.
Sebastian Aho o2.5 shots on goal (-175)
Aho has cleared this line in four straight games, averaging 4.5 shots on 7.3 shot attempts. Against the Canucks – who allow the sixth most shots on goal to centres, averaging 11.3 per game – Aho has cleared in three of his last four games, averaging 3.3 shots on 5.5 shot attempts.
