Patrick Kane is going back to where it all began.

Early Thursday morning, the Chicago Blackhawks announced that they have signed winger Patrick Kane to a two-year contract. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that the contract carries a cap hit of $8 million.

Kane, who will turn 38 in mid-November, put up 16 goals and 41 assists through 67 games with the Detroit Red Wings last season. Kane spent three seasons with Detroit. Prior to that, he played 19 games with the New York Rangers after the Blackhawks dealt him at the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline. Chicago originally selected Kane with the first overall pick in the 2007 NHL draft. He was an instant star, helping the Hawks capture Stanley Cups in 2010, 2013, and 2015.

Kane can be found all over the Chicago Blackhawks’ all-time record books, sitting second in franchise history in assists (779) and points (1,225), and third in games played (1,161) and goals (446). Now he’s going back to where it started, and even with his decline in abilities, he might be the best winger Connor Bedard has ever played with since being drafted in Chicago.

Remember about a month ago, when we told you about Dallas and Seattle’s big offers for Jason Robertson, both of which he declined? Seattle offered an eight-year contract worth $15 million annually, but Robertson said thanks, but no thanks. Instead, the restricted free agent and the Stars have agreed to a one-year deal worth $12 million.

That means that in summer 2027, Robertson will headline the class of unrestricted free agents and will be heading into his age 28 season. That sets him up for a big pay day with the NHL salary cap continuing to rise. Robertson put up 45 goals and 51 assists through 82 games with the Stars last season.

Earlier this week in another NHL Notebook, we discussed the far apart asks from the Columbus Blue Jackets and goaltender Jet Greaves’ camp heading into arbitration. As expected, the two sides are going to settle in the middle.

Per Elliotte Friedman, the settlement between Greaves and Columbus is a three-year deal worth $5 million annually.

Greaves has emerged as the main man in the Jackets’ crease, posting a 26-19-9 record with a 2.60 GAA, .908 save percentage and a pair of shutouts in 53 starts and 55 appearances last season. He’s a solid young goaltender, having just turned 25 in March. Maybe one day he’ll suit up for Team Canada at the Olympic level… (that’s an inside joke for Canucks Conversation listeners, as I suggested Greaves should have been one of Canada’s three goaltenders at the most recent Winter Olympics).
